Exclamation Bad Oil pump?

Ok so I beating on my car racing some nissan 240sx with an Sr20det, and when i get back I notice my oil pressure is kinda low and start to hear a ticking noise from the valve train. The tick noise gets louder as rpm's go up. So figure its time for a no oil pump. Does sound right I just want to make sure this is my problem. My car as 56xxx miles on it. Oh ya any sugguestions for and aftermaket oil pump and timming chian? Thanks in advance,
Brian R.

I just changed my oil pump on my 98. I had around 60,000 miles on the car. I noticed that my oil pump Oring seal had a small cut in it when i replaced it. I replaced the pump with a TSP ported oil pump and a new seal and oil pressure is powerful now. I also swaped the chain to a ls2 one. I guess its good insurance.I heard that the oil pumps our not as good on 98s and a couple of them went bad. BTW how did the race go?

Yeah I plan on swaping all that stuff out since I think the pump has gone south. I heard about 98 ls1's haveing that problem. The race went good by the top of thrid gear I started pulling pretty good.

yeap that would sound like the problem to me, your lifters are not getting pressurerized so the tapping is the excess clearance between the valve and the rocker. Plus the 98-99 models are known for the weak oil pumps.

CammedTA,

Just curious, what kinda numbers are you putting down because you and I have pretty much the same mods, including the same cam.

I swapped out my oil pump when the cam was done.

Default Oil pumps

Not to hi jack this post but we had some pumps that we coated for a local LS engine building shop that has since gone south. These are blended and ported, been oil shedding coated on the exterior and the pump gears are coated to improve oiling and life. We will sell these for $85.00 plus shipping. GM parts nubmer 12586665. Thanks

you could have more problems than just a need for a new oil pump. Maybe a new engine.

777, could you explian what else could be wrong. The oil pressure was at like 40 psi, under normal driving condtions I only went a couple of miles before I noticed it was lower than normal. The rpms never got above 2500 and the ticking sound was comeing from the heads.

Well if the ticking is definatly coming from the heads it's pretty much going to be a lifter. It could be a loose rocker but I doubt it. I was thinking of a spun bearing, but it wouldn't be coming from the heads.
