Default What cam and heads for $2,500.

I have a 2002 camaro with cat back exaust, custom y pipe, Every hotchkis suspension mod, lid, smooth bellows, ported MAF, ripper shifter, centerforce dual friction clutch, and 4.10 gears. I want a good cam and head package that comes with all the gaskets and bolts I need. I only have $2500 that the wife will part with. Please help me decide, I would hate to buy a junk package and waste my money. One final note is I need to pass smog so please take that into consideration.

I am going with the 226 114 myself. I am hoping with a good tune it will pass. Heads dont really effect emissions its the cam that you got to worry about.

I think you're on the right track here. The key is no overlap. Sorry, robbin' you of some lope there, but you can dial the idle down as low as possible after your tune... Then get the best breathing cat backs that Cali will allow (if any ). Can you use the Modular Loudmouth and switch between bullet and resonator for emissions testing??? Why don't you call Thunder Racing, and tell them what you're trying to do. Get 'em to grind a cali-emissions-friendly cam. Considering that everyone else in cali has to pass, too, you can go for anything from a CHeatr to a 224, and with a good tune, pass emissions AND be really competitive on the street. Def on the 205's; good compliment to the CHeatr for your goals...

I'm suprised some enterprising sponsor hasn't done it already, and marketed it as the "Cali Hot Cam" or some such thing. We see this question all the time from cali members, so there must be a hungry market for an emissions-tested head-cam pkg's there. Come on cam sponsors, you've got a niche here that's crying our for a product!

when i was doing my H/C i had the same factors. must pass CA smog, and had a small budget. so i got some stage 2 5.7 heads 10.6:1 CR and a 222/224 .566/.568 114 cam.

it makes 400rwhp 375rwtq. the car makes awsome power! i love this cam.! i run FLP's with no cats through an open cut-out, this things sounds like a NASCAR! i love it.
and it lobes very nice with a stock idle speed.

and best of all it passed smog with FLP cats with room to spare, with no detuning.

if i were to do it again. id probly go 11:1CR and a 224/224 .581 112. should make around 425-430rwhp. but may need a slight detune to pass smog.

good luck to you.

Wow guys. Thanks for the comments. Last night I ordered my AFR 205cc and CheaTR cam. With Comp Cam Pushrods it came to $2,430. I am trying to decide which tuning program to buy. HPT or EFI Live. Any Opinions? I have searched around on our website and have come down to these two.
