Default So what makes it an LS1...

Or rather what makes it not an LS1?

I mean you drop a 408 into your f-body of choice and it is no longer an LS1, no debate there.

But what about heads and cam, or even better yet, how about a cam only car. Is a cammed car still considered an LS1? It still has an LS1 block, pistons, rods, heads, but the cam is not an LS1 cam so would this mean that you no longer have an true LS1 powered f-body? And what if you have heads too, and say you have AFR's which aren't even re-worked LS1 heads, they are a completely new head design all together, could you still consider that an LS1?

I'm just curious to what limit people put on still being able to call it an LS1.

i would draw the line whenit comes to cubes. if you wanted to be picky, the first mod you made to the engine could void it as an ls1.

The motor is an ls1 no matter what u slap on the 346 or a forged 347.

It is no longer a ls1 when u put a lq4/9 in or if you put a non LSx motor in the car.

I agree. if the block came from a car with a certain option - ie ls1 or ls6 - That's what the engine is called.

Seriously guys, this topic has been beaten to death. It is something no one agrees on, so arguing over it is stupid. Most people will tell you that the ls1/ls6/lq4/etc are all branded with the "ls1" label, my car came stock with an ls6 block, therefore it is no longer an ls1? Most will agree that the C5-R block doesn't qualify though, but that doesn't matter, do a search

It's a GEN III or IV small block. That covers them all

Who cares?

Seriously, it is an LSx based motor (Gen III motors are a "family", LS1 being the generic label for all of them) weather you are using a LS1 block, LS6 block, LQ4 block, or C5R block, no difference. What heads and cam you run is irrevelant, its still a LSx based motor.

Is a SBC with AFR heads not still a SBC?
Is a BBC with Dart heads not still a BBC?
Is a SBF with Trick Flow heads not still a SBF?

BTW, by your theory, since your car (a 2002) came with an LS6 intake, most likely an LS6 oil pump, and quite possibly even an LS6 block, its not even an LS1 car to begin with, right?

I have wondered this myself, kinda. I think it comes down to the block. If it says "5.7L" on the back it is an LS1, or LS6 I guess. So technically, my 427 is an LS1

Wow, I didn't mean to start an argument here. I was not even trying to say one way or the other. I was just curious what peoples thoughts were on the matter.

Oh and SPANKY LS1 - I care, that is why I asked. Again it was just curiousity, it was not my intention to start a war / heated debate / argument over it. And I have already checked, I have an LS1 block not the LS6 block, but thanks for playing.
