Default 450rwhp?

Hello,
Me and my father are going to build a carbed ls1 with a th350 tranny to run in our 34 Ford Coupe. We want around 450-500rwhp, what is a good setup to go with thats not too too expensive? We aren't looking for peak horsepower we want have a nice flat or almost flat hp and torque curve.

Thanks...

The only way to achieve a flat tq. curve at those HP levels is with a supercharger.

Have fun and good luck

Really don't want to go supercharger... what setup's will get me somewhere around these numbers and still have a lot of low end power?

I agree, > cubic inch displacement = flat tq. curve. But you should also be advised that 450 - 500 RWHP on a 34 coupe will be unuseable unless you have some serious suspension mods. Check out the FI forums. Most guys with Vettes running FI can't get street tires to hook up.

If you keep the cam's LSA wide, that will reduce how peaky it is and flatten it out a bit. A 383 (450 rwhp) or 408 (closer to 500 rwhp) would be your best bet to get a flat curve.

I don't know how the carb manifolds influence the power curve.

Could I get close to 400rwhp with a TR224 Cam and a good set of heads + exhaust? And have a relativly flat curve?

Estimating 15% for drivetrain losses you will need approx 480 HP at the crank to achieve 400 rwhp. Your not going to get that much out of an LS1 normally asperated with a flat tq curve.

Sorry, ain't gonna happen.

You can get a good powerband going n/a and stock displacement on an LS1. Ask anyone with a modded 03/04 Cobra who's messed with cammed LS1's, and if they're honest with you, they'll tell you outright.

For your street rod, I would suggest the TSP 233/239 cam and some 5.3 heads from TEA, probably the stage 1.5 or stage 2. You need to go with higher compression with a bigger cam to keep a good torque curve. Many on here like this cam for because of its wide powerband. But be forewarned, it is an aggressive grind with steep ramp rates. It WILL be hard on springs. So make sure and get some strong springs that can take the abuse and good lifters, the Comp 850-16's at a minimum.

Get that carb dialed in well, and you'll be happy with this combo.

i have a custom 224 cam that is close to the tr cam, and cam only i am at 360hp and 355tq and that torque is there as soon as i get on the throttle. and that is through crappy 98 heads and an auto, with a good set of heads 400 is very possible.

My 01 z28 had patriot stageII heads with 59cc chambers on a stock shortblock with an LG Motorsports G5X2 cam 595/605 lift, underdrive pulley, lid, and hooker long tubes. it made 440hp and 416lb-ft at the wheels.

Do you have any dyno sheets or does anyone for a setup similar to this? I've heard this cam is really aggressive for the street.... too aggressive?

I don't have any sheets, but do a search. Lots of people run that cam. If tuned right, it's not at all too aggressive for the street. It would work well in a streetrod with modest gearing due to less weight.

if you want some good torque you might want to check out some of the futral cams.

I have one of Simple Quick Racings cams....relatively small...232/234 with 60x lift. It put 400 to the wheels through an auto. Might look into it. Good street manners with tuning.
