Default Is this cam big enough?

Do you think a 234/238 .598/.605 114 is big enough for a 427 with AFR 225's?

Plan on keeping my LS6 intake(if that makes a diiference)

I'm not looking to squeeze every last bit of HP out of this set-up, what I want is a car that I can drive everyday in stop and go traffic, and that idles smoothly with no surging. Something I can drive to the dragstrip run mid-high tens N/A(maybe even low tens on my 100 shot) and drive home.

If you have any suggestion, I'm listening

TIA

Compared to what everyone else is running out there, its under cammed. We cant tell you what your track times will be like because we dont know what the rest of the car is like (and if 6-speed, how good of a driver you are). As for surging, you should have little to none.

I know it smaller than what most people are running in stroker motors but like I said, I'm not really looking for every bit of HP out of it.

As for my car it's a 2002 A4 with 3:42's and a built 4L65E. I'll swap torque converters later(something in the 2800 range probably) plus the usual bolt-ons, CAI, 1 3/4" LT's, hi-flo cats and exhuast. Also have a dry 100 shot.

Honestly, I'd like to be mid tens(but high tens would be okay) and in the 120+ mph area N/A and low tens on the bottle, but I will sacrice alittle performance for driveablity/reliabilty. It seems stock cubed cars with AFR 205s and the 224/228 cam are running between 11.0-11.5 range at 117-121 mph(A4's)

Is it possible with a cam that does not surge and has very little to no lope to it. Trying to keep it as much as a sleeper as possible.

Still open to any suggestion/opinions.

that 237/242 is the TSP MagicStick v.3 right?
I bet you could get a custom one ground in the 250-262 range with a higher LSA so you can have some driveablity still. But IMO you don't want to under-cam that motor.

Why build a 427 and use a small cam and a small verter? I second the MS3, I love mine

I'm actually in the middle of a 408 build with a set of ETP 240's (titanium valves)and a baby cam myself...... I haven't decide on the exact specs but i DO know it will be in the 234-238 range (either a 234/236 or 236/238) on a 114-115 LSA

I have the same goals you have (smoooooth idle,10's N/A, etc)

The cam choices you and I have are VERY small (compared to some) but try and keep this in mind MTI "swears by" BIG MOTORS with littlecams... and they make GOOOOOOOD power.(and they've been touching efi cars before some of the shops to the right even existed) Good luck with your setup and keep us posted (i will be keeping an eye out for it!)

BTW I just rode in a Z06 with a 429 in it with a 232 /236 114 LSA (KOOKS 1 7/8,90/90,etc)...... and it was AMAZING.......made my stomach hurt a little! (seriously)

If it were my 427 i would have went slightly bigger (236ish) IMO a 230's cam in a 427 with good heads= FUN (without the headaches of a big cam)

I have a bigger cam 240's on a 112 in my 447. Not considered that big for larger cubes. You will be missing all the fun without the big lobe. I think you could move the size up and still achieve what you are trying to do. Good luck.

I would say look at the specs on the LS7 cam and design it somewhat after that, maybe a little more agressive.

I am a big motor, small cam guy. I have an awesome power band, pretty impressive rwhp, car runs as smooth as a baby's bottom, and can pass any sniffer test for emissions. That's what you call streetable!

Even MTI uses a 242/242 in there 427's. I'd reccomend a 244/248 XE-R lobe on a 114 for what you are wanting to do.

Thanks for all the replies.

I've been looking for the Z06 cam specs tonight but all I can find is that it has .591 lift, but no duration or what LSA. I don't think I would go any smaller than what GM would put in a stock car.

MickeyZ06, do you mind telling me the spec on your cam?

I actually don't know, Mike at Rapid made it as a custom grind for me. If you are interested in buying one like it, you can call him and ask about Mikey B's smog legal cam, he'll know exactly what you are talking about.

Since you are getting some killer heads, you'll gain more power and torque by decreasing intake restrictions than you will increasing cam size (in a streetable setup). I would HIGHLY recommend that you get a ported FAST 90mm intake along with a Nick Williams 90mm TB. On a 427 with AFR 225 heads, they would be worth 30-40 rwhp over an LS6 intake and ported TB. Think about how much bigger of a cam you'd have to get to gain 30-40 rwhp. And the best part is you have stock driveability. FWIW, I'd still recommend you get a cam in the low 240 range though for best all-around power.
