Why would you not just want to send them out to someone?

Well it will depend, I'd say anywhere from 1,000-3,000 from a shop.

Yeah, its closer to 3000 when they screw up porting and have to buy a new set of 243 castings. Id highly suggest sending the heads out to a shop that specializes in ls1/ls6 heads. While anyone with a die grinder can clean those heads up, a shop that specializes in these heads will give you a much bigger bang for the buck. IMHO

Thank you. it would probably be more cost effective to just get a set of afr heads.

Would it be really worth the trouble to bolt on a pair of ls6 heads that arent ported/polished?

Probably not, you'd gain 10-15rwhp probably. They flow better and have a half point high compression.

One thing to be careful of, there are a lot of LS6 heads being sold that are actually LS2 heads, i.e., no lightweight valves. There is a guy in Canada that is selling these here, on Corvetteforum, on Z06Vette.com and on Ebay all under different names.

Is that the only diffrence as far as the valves are concerned?

Who in the hell wants to keep factory valves? Whether they are lightweight or not. The only way to buy heads you intend to get ported is bare. Dont waste time with the cheesy stock springs and valves.

I believe a lot of people keep their z06 valves. If you have a reason why you shouldn't, I'd like to hear it. They are expensive and light.

Well you cant keep the stock valves if you want bigger valves... I guess its al up to what you want, a lighter valvetrain, or more top end flow... Both have their virtues, but if i were sending the heads out to be ported, id probably opt for the bigger valves, but thats just me.

The back angle on the valve and overall valve diameter dont support much power when you start porting. The valve back angle in relation to the seat throat width doesnt do well when you throw air at it from .500+. In stock form of course it works just fine, if you are unported and not looking for max effort. Lightweight valves DONT hang the moon unless you are spinning serious rpms and trying to help fight valve float and keep harmonics in the valvetrain. Did you like to hear it?

Yeah, I wasn't thinking about larger valves that come with ported heads. Sorry about that.
