Need Pics of Block Clearance on 383 SBC. I baught an Eagle 4340 Steel Crank today from a place in Jackson, MS. Jegs had it priced for 679.99 and I got this crank for 499.99!!!! I saved about 200 bucks on it all together! I was very happy!
Now I need to know about how much machine work I am looking at to make it work right.

Re: Need Pics of Block Clearance on 383 SBC. You need to get a new set of bearings and put the crank in the motor, spin it around with a rod on it and find where it hits. Most times it's on the lower part of the cylinder along the oil pain rail. You can machine that out with a mill or with a die grinder. I have one done in the shop right now but no digital camera on me to take a pic.

I might just get the guy that I'm getting to do all my balancing and stuff to clearance it for me but I'de like to get an idea of what needs to be done b/c if it isn't a WHOLE lot a grinding I'll do it myself.

Re: Need Pics of Block Clearance on 383 SBC. It's about 1-2hours worth of work. If you have a compressed air powered grinder and a respirator you can do it, if not leave it to him. It's dirty work.

Re: Need Pics of Block Clearance on 383 SBC. Here is a pic of the relief needed for a 383. The semi-circular indent right above the rod end is what needs to be ground, or the rod end will hit the block.

Re: Need Pics of Block Clearance on 383 SBC. Some blocks dont need any clearancing at all. The 383 I built for my 72 nova didnt. This was a 74 2 bolt block with splayed billet caps installed. Also I used 5.7 inch rods. The only problem I had was a couple of the rods hit the cam. Just had to grind a little off the balancing pad on the big end of the rod. I would say just put it together without the rings and see what all hits. If it looks like more than you want to tackle let the machine shop do it.
