HELP, installed heads and new cam, knocking like hell!!
Did you give it about 5 minutes for the lifters to fully pump up, especially if you ve had themm out of the car?
And upon inquiry I was told by TSP that their 233/239 would be tight and that the 232/234 was about as big as I should go with .054 gaskets.
So, I too suspect PTV contact.

Mine tick loudly( dont knock), sounds a little more like PTV, but do agree that it should stumble/stop running if the valves were the culprit.

Did you do a wipe test?
What is your preload value?
Is the noise comming from top or bottom? (I remember your running G5X3/G5X4), I know you said intake area but are you sure?

Doing a leakdown test first...
1) The gross lift has NOTHING to do with P/V clearance. Forget the .630" lift will ya.

2) The IO/EC are identical to an X2 at a 109* ICL and I was told this cam clears the 5.3 heads. Even the X3 is tight but may clear and that one is much bigger than this stick.
3) Still not sure if the cam is in correctly but this will be checked. Accumulated tolerance on the keyways and sprockets may be an issue but no way to tell where this is until later tonight. Like "Pred" said, dot to dot isn't the best way to do this but Scott will be verifying a lot of this stuff this weekend.
4) Soaking the lifters does nothing to them other than lubricating the outside. Not a bad idea but this has no effect on the internals or the pumping up of said lifters. The oil pump feeds the internals and unless these new lifters are defective, they should be fine. Again, one more thing to check and inspect.
Stupid as it sounds but it's actually too bad the car runs so well because the troubleshooting of the noise is frustrating. No backfiring, no huffing out the TB or anything out of the ordinary powerwise. We're hoping is not something foreign that got into the cylinder (Scott is VERY fussy) or something more fatal like a rod bearing. (That was another item suggested by Scott's friend.)

Question for Pred.....
The TSP cam you mentioned. What LSA and ICL? Without that info, the 233-239 duration numbers are meaningless to verify any P/V clearance comparisons. You can Email or PM to not hijack the thread.
Ed
You have been MORE than helpful throughout this entire process and I thank you!! I don't know about the pushrods being too short or too long, I did the preload per Ed's instructions the best I could/know. The first time with the 7.35's it seemed to short, I installed the 7.4's and they seem to be correct if not a smidge too long. But the outcome of both pushrods is identical, the knock is there. I think the car ran a little better with the 7.35's to tell you the truth, but both times idling and revving it was amazing how smooth and quick the throttle response was, I mean, I BARELY touched the throttle body and it revved fast.
It could be a stupid install error and something fell in the cylinder during install, I vaccumed the hell out of it, wiped the walls down, but maybe when the head was going on something fell in, who knows. I will do what Ed says for checking, worst case, the heads come off and I see what happened, if nothing is apparently wrong, it could be the motor just let go at the worst possible time
I really don't feel like installing the stock heads and seeing if the noise is still there, but that may be my EXTREMELY last resort. Last edited by Orange Peel; Nov 18, 2005 at 11:10 AM.
BTW, I don't want to scare you, but I did fish a loose retainer out of the water passages from my PRC's when I got them (but that was an early version worked at Racetech)
Nope, don't have access to one of those
