Default Advice for Santa on cam selection - 224/224 114LSA ???

I have been reading everything I can find regarding selecting the right cam. I’m suffering from extreme information overload but had kind of decided that the answer for my particular situation was the Thunder Racing TR224i/224e 114LSA. Then I went back and reread the sticky I had read in the beginning of my research and came across the comment “If you want to be a lazy **** and not do your own research to find the cam that best suits your application you can just pick up a tr224 114 cam …”

Right now my car drives very close to stock and I would like to keep it that way more or less. It is mostly used at the track (maybe 30 days per year for a total of 150 to 200 passes annually) we also use it as a regular driver whenever one of our other cars is indisposed. My wife is not interested in going to the grocery store in an all-out racer but, on the other hand, I would like to get as much out of it at the track as I reasonably can. A small amount of lope would be nice but just enough to be barely noticeable.

Current mods: lid, cold air intake, 3200 stall converter, 4.10 gears, shift kit, underdrive pulley, QTP long-tube headers and an exhaust cutout. I have no intention of ever running on the bottle. I currently run 12.10’s to 12.30’s depending on the weather but have no intention of ever going quicker than 11.50 because I don’t want to install a roll cage.

I know there have been a zillion threads on the topic but if anyone cares to toss in their 2¢ on this one I would welcome any advice. Santa needs my decision soon.

If you get a good tune when your done you can get a more agresive cam and still have good street manors. In my first setup I had full boltons and the tr224-112 and after about a week I wanted more. Its a good cam, I just always want alittle more. I would look in to the F-13 from futral or some thing like the G1 from MTI, both sponsers. Also what year is the car? If pre 01 get a ls6 intake as well.

TR224 is a great street cam. I have it and I have a friend with an auto that has it too. He also has the 112 lsa with no problems. It is all in the tune. I'm suprised you went with 4.10 gears in an auto. Not runnig out of gear in the 1/4?

I have the TR227/114 just a tad bigger but not much. I've been very happy with it & drives like stock. I idle it down to 650 to get a nice lope & shift it up high for the track 6750. Times in the sig.

I will definitely get a tune. In fact, I had already made the decision to do so before I got the bug for a cam. Then it occurred to me that I could do a tune just once rather than doing it again for a second time when I got around to the cam. Saves money in the long (at least that’s how I explained it to my wife).

It’s a 1999. The ls6 intake is high up on the list for my next mod.

I always seem to end up wanting a tad more also (like a little bit more stall than the 3200 I chose). I will look into these other cams.

Right now I’m just where I want to be – about 5,900 rpms when I go through the traps at about 111 mph on 26” tires. My next set of tires will probably be 27” assuming I pick up a couple of mph with the cam.

The only issue is high-speed highway driving although I do very little. At speeds below 65 mph they are barely noticeable. But I sometimes run at Sumerduck Dragway which means I spend about 25 miles on I-95 where traffic tends to cruise at 80. I feel like I’m driving a Honda.

Based on the input above as well as advice from some locals, here’s the verdict that has been given to Santa:

Comp Cam:
  • Intake duration of 224° w/ Thunder Racing style lobes
  • Exhaust duration of 228° w/ XE lobes
  • 113° LSA
  • 2° built-in advance
  • Comp Cam 918 springs
  • 7.40 inch chromemoly pushrods
  • titanium retainers

Thanks for the help.
