What effect would improper seat pressure and coil bind have on the performance of the car? I've been running unshimmed Patriot Gold's for nearly two years now without any mechanical problems, but the car has consistently dynoed lower than most other M6 T-ReX cars I've seen, despite having a "normal" powerband.

Usually it will cause premature valve float. I have seen cases however of weak springs killing power overall.

Sorry, I'm not trying to hijack the thread, I imagine this is related though. As far as valvefloat, I didn't see any on the dyno.

Could this be a case of weak springs killing power?

Josh, you had a little bit of that same "gap" in your dyno chart that Allen had. He also has the T-Rex cam, I wonder if he is using the same springs without shims as well.

It would be interesting to know. Of course, he probably could've made 15-20 more RWHP with a cutout, putting him pretty much at the "norm" for the cam.

To do a first class job you should measure each spring. This will take a while, but that way if you possibly have a spring that is out of spec you will be able to catch it before installing it on your motor. You also need to check the install height on each valve, especially if any work has been done to the heads. If for some reason one valve is sitting at a different height in the head then you would need to shim accordingly.

Install Height=1.800"
Bind Height= 1.090"
1.800-1.090=.710"

We want to shim .050" from the bind height or 1.090+.050 or 1.140".
So if you are running a cam with .600" of lift you would want your install height to be 1.140"+.600" or 1.740". If your install height is 1.800" without shims you would need .060" of shim. Remember: Measure carefully.

i installed a TRex on an M6 car with unshimmed patriot golds. Car made 422rwhp through factory exhaust. I just figured I'd throw that on the table.

so if the trex is .608/.612 he would need .052"/.048" (respectively) shims?

135@1.800"

Open
350@1.150"

Coil Bind
.710" lift/ 1.090"

1.090" + .050"= 1.140"
1.140" + .609"= 1.749"

If you start off with 1.800" of install height with no shims you will need .051". You will probably wind up with slightly more (say .060") because you will probably never see the full lift at the valve anyways.
