I ran my 98 block routinely to 6300-6500 rpms with no oil starvation problems. But I always ran 6.5 quarts of oil, because if it was 1 qt low the pressure would drop during WOT.

But I always ran 6.5 quarts of oil, because if it was 1 qt low the pressure would drop during WOT.
what is the amount of oil that gm says the motor is suposed to take.

very informative thank you so its actually only 97-98 that had the oil problem and the 99-02s did not have the problem.

Like 66Deuce said the manual calls for 5.5 quarts, which is fine under normal conditions. But you should run 6.5 quarts for racing or even high-spirited driving.

I didn't know LS1's had beehive valve springs. That's pretty cool. That's yet another area where Chrysler copied off when they designed the Hemi V8's.
