thunder recommends at least 4.10's on the manual...is this really necessary?

I would say go with what Thunder says because they wouldn't just make it up if it didn't need to be, they don't want you to be an unhappy customer, when I was researching cams they told me this was a cam that is more for track use then street use so they told me they had a TRAK cam that was more streetable than the TREX cam and 3.73 would be fine with that cam. I know there are some people on here with that cam that can tell you for sure but they probly will say what I just did and I think Paul from Thunder Racing is on here and posts at times so maybe they will also give you some input on your question.

Yeah, I would go with the suggestions above and with Thunder's suggestions as well. Better happy than mad.

Get at least 4.30 gears.

Stock gears are fun too if you like doing some 0-150mph runs.

I have a cam that is very close to the T-rex. A little bigger. My Moser 12 bolt will be here Monday. It has 4.10 gears. You need it to keep the cam in it's power band. 4.30 or 4.56 gears will work to.

I didn't elaborate any on my first post but from research on the trex cam its not going to produce power until your upper RPM's and with the 410 and 456 gears they will put you in your RPM range where the cam will make power and that is basically what everyone else on here is saying also but at least 4.10's and it won't hurt you at all on your top end with the 6 speed.
