Hopefully zero, but if you're asking how many times combustion takes place; 4000.

Actually 2,000. remember a cylinder fires every other revolution. Its not a two stroke.

isn't it a spark waste system though and the coil fires twice per cycle?

You'll have 1 missfire out of 6>8 firing in a conventional plug.
0 missfires is not possible.

But detonation (pre-ignition) should be ZERO.

You are right that it is every other rev, but look at the math.

1000 cycles firing every other revolution=500 ignitions per cylinder

500*8=4000

The question is how many times combustion takes place, not ignition fires.

4 combustion strokes per revolution.

4*1000 =4000. same thing different math.

Some more different math

8 cylinders , firing every other revolution. (in other words only half the time)

8 * .5 x 1000 revolution = 4000
