Question Low Lift Cams & More

Here's your chance to play tech consultant for the day.

Got a head / cam, pulley, LT's with cats, ported TB installed this year on my 2002 Camaro SS. Made 400 hp (Mustang Dyno) 370+ tq. 12.8 @ 115.5 (no suspension mods yet) (car is an M6 - 10 bolt)

The heads are the GMPP LS6 heads with 02 Z06 springs and are milled .05 to get a 61 cc chamber. Cam is Comp 224 / 228 @ 538+/- lift on a 112

Question 1.: I want more power and was considering a bigger cam: either a Lunati 230 / 237 @ 545 +/- lift on a 112 or a Comp 228 / 230 @ 575 +/- on a 112. The Lunati would probably allow me to continue using the Z06 springs but would it seriously degrade my driveability or low end? The Comp would need 918 springs. Do you guys see any P/V issues with either cam, power differences, driveability, etc. Sound off!

Question 2.: How much of a gain with this one change (either cam) and would it be worth it?

Question 3.: Would it be better to keep my existing cam for drivablity and low end and instal a FAST 90 / MW 90 and electric water pump?

Question 4.: What I really want to see is quicker et's and higher mph, what will subframe connectors, a new torque arm, LCA's, etc. do for me with just street tires? I would really like to do 120 mph or close to it in the 1/4.

Have at it guys.

Nobody wants it, ok then let's just start another F13 TEA thread, there must be a thousand out there already and we can get another replay of that tired topic.

I tried.

Go with an F13! j/k

Retaining the LS6 springs, the only option you have is the GMPP ASA cam (which gives a wonderful powerband and pulls hard mid/high too- but may not be worth the swap over what you've got already).
The Lunati 230/237 will beat the sh*t out of those springs.

So, given your new parameter (new springs no matter what if you want something other than the ASA), what wuold you like to do?

Edit.

Cool

Timing events (duration) create more P/V issues than the gross lift.

Look for more lift with similar duration to gain more torque.

Change to the matching spring package for the cam you are using.

Valve springs are not the place to try and save money...

Glad somebody has a sense of humor around here. I have read your posts before and you have a lot of good things to say about the ASA. I have also read a number of posts about the Hotcam; good and bad. I'm not unhappy with my combo, but I was worried about reliability and driveability. The Comp grind I am using seems to be a split between the Hotcam and ASA.

With this first head and cam install, I overcame that fear, and now I would like to try a little more. The only thing is that I have seen several GM High Tech and High Performance Chevy articles that have shown on a relatively small difference between the Hotcam, the Patriot 226 / 580 lift, and Comp 228 / 230 cams with ported heads.

I was tempted and still am with the Comp 228 / 230 (570+/- lift)and 918 springs, maybe something a tad bigger, however I don't want to be spinning the motor to 7k either and blow it up. I still have to live with my wife.

F11 has a bit more lift (590 +/- lift) and same duration... what you think?

Think it would be better to go with a FAST 90 with a NW 90? It would be nice if I could get the 20 - 25 rwhp gain everybody talks about.

if it was my car,i would do the suspension mods first.although it will help traction with street tires, your going to need at least drag radials,(street slicks would be better) to get a decent launch.your trap speed isn't bad,get those 60' down and you should see 11s.then if your not happy,i would look at a bigger cam, or maybe the FAST intake if it can give you the gains your looking for.
