Default Big question about cam break in and install

I got a futural fm4 226/226 575/575 on a 112 lsa.......for christmas....i also got a 921 spring kit, ls2 timming chain, hardened 7.400 pushrods, and an ls6 oil pump. Im going to start the install on my 1999 ss with 17000 miles on friday afternoon and hopefully finish up on sunday. Thing is i have to go back to college on monday. So i have to drive 350 miles back to school. Is this going to be bad for my motor? should i just leave my ss back home and get it broken in first? i would really appreciate some advice thanks guys.

There's really no need to break in a roller cam. You will want to break in the springs, though, before getting on it. Most people keep the rpms under 3000 or so for the first few hundred miles, letting them get hot and cold a few times. I did that for 300 miles, changed the oil again, and called it good.

The only reason I would suggest not driving it to school is that you may want to drive it around town for a bit to make sure everything is cool. That's just my personal preference, but I'd rather be safe than sorry.

Enjoy the new cam

My advice: if this is your only form of transportation at school, leave the cam install until a later date. You want to leave yourself plenty of time in case something goes wrong. No tuning could pose some big driveability problems if you aren't very lucky...

Local GM dealer can order it and get it pretty quick. I went for the Lingenfelter, only $89.00. Good enough for Lingenfelter, good enough for me.

Because you have a 99, I would definately recommend stepping up to an LS6 ported oil pump. It does not have to be ported, but I would go ahead with it anyway, just for that extra flow.

I drove my car for a while after the TSP228R .588 install. It took a couple starts and short trips to learn how to stay running, but I say do it now if you are confident with the install, drive it as much as you can before the haul back to college. My car is a M6, I had to use both feet to operate all three pedals to keep the car running and stopped while in gear, but it got better, and I got better with my heal/toe brake/gas skill. But not long after the only problem the car had was finding idle after start up.

There was a big discussion a while back about the "new" material being used for the manufacturing of the springs nowadays. It was said that it is not neccasary to heat cycle the springs of today. That being said I will still give mine a cycle or two just for the added piece of mind.

Hmmm, I hadn't heard about new springs not needing to be heat cycled. That's interesting. I think I'll continue to heat cycle mine just for my peace of mind.

Also, I agree with the others... probably a better idea to wait until you can get a tune. Some people seem to throw in fairly large cams that idle pretty decent right off of the bat. My car, on the other hand, wouldn't even come close to idling when I put in my F14 on stock tune. Drove it 2-footed riding the converter all the way to the tuner. Definately not an ideal way to have to drive your car. Now I can't wait to get my HPTuners so I can get it really dialed in.
