Hahahahaha one ******* paper towel...figures.
Would of been nice if someone alerted me about the possiblity of the second paper towel being elsewhere in the motor! lol. Instead of telling me not to worry about it.

Damn, I had to read all 10 pages to get a full understanding of what's going on here. Lithium, man I hope you get this sorted out, you've been a really good sport about this considering the situation you're in. I'll keep my fingers crossed for ya, you just keep us updated.

Just take your time, youll find the problem. Start with all the simple stuff first, like the headers, pulley, plugs, make sure everythings pulg up, & so on. Do you have any SES lights?
I had my pulley go on to far one time rubbing on the oil pump & it would make a good knocking/ticking noise.

I live in Dana Point, just north of San Clemente! I never would have thought that there would be fellow LS1Tech brothers on here that lived so close! Wish I could help!

I'm going to step outside of the box here a bit and suggest that not everyone (not at his current experience level, anyway) should work on something as complicated as a modern V8.
I like this kid just as much as the next guy, but it's clear he may benefit from some professional help. All this talk of "loud banging noises" now.. WTF? Possibly a rod bolt came loose; that would be a good first guess. And why would THAT be?
Seriously, all the good will of this forum cannot guide his hands here. And quite possibly he's just having a string of bad luck. But it's up to him to "do something" about it, or hope for his luck to turn around. "Success happens when preparation meets opportunity".
Yes, go ahead and "flame on".
