Default rebuilding

i was gonna purchase an ls1 to put into my s10 and am wondering if i should buy a complete engine or rebuild a long block. i see plenty of long blocks on ebay for less than a grand and am wondering if its worth it. also wats the difficulty on these blocks for rebuilds, i heard they are much easier then the old designs. thanks.

I would order a fresh shortblock and call it a day....They may be able to work out a deal on shipping from a shop.

Short block is the block with rotating assembly installed.
Long block has the above with the addition of heads.

GO to JRP's FAQ, he has a link in his sig, and you will need all of the item on the 2nd page I think, it's in black and white, there are 3 different images with a "parts list" below it. If you buy a shortblock with a good rotating assembly you would need an oil pan, heads, assuming complete with springs, retainers, valves, etc., valve covers, coil packs, plug wires, intake, tb, maf, exhaust manifolds or headers, and a computer then I think you would be set. Oh yea, the gaskets, tools, a little knowledge and a little luck.

I bought a short block out of a wrecked camaro with 30 000 miles on it for 550, I think as long as you take your time and make sure you have the right measurements with everything in spec you should be good to go, I'm using all new bearings, rings, gaskets, and maybe bolts if I can find a good package. The other great thing about GM is that almost all the sensors are interchangable. I believe the cam sensor must be from an ls1 though. I would say its very do-able if you have patience and little know how. just my $.02

You will new bolts for many places though. Like the head bolts for example are a one time thing, no secong chance with those puppies unless you get ARP which may not be a bad deal due to being able to re-use them.
