Default New Cam and Tuning Question

Hi there,

My 98 Z28 (A4) is currently sat in a garage with its engine opened up requiring a new cam and lifters so I thought I would take this opportunity to get a new cam, lifters, rockers, springs and timing chain.

I am either going to get the LS1 Hotcam or a 224/224 ThunderRacing cam. The only thing I am concerned about is that I may not be able to get a tune for my car so easily as I am in England. Would my car be driveable with the 224/224 and no tune or am I just better off getting the Hotcam and having done with it? (I was advised that I can definitely get away with no tune for it)

I don't want to have to worry about uprating the cam again in the near future so want to go for a good one while the engine is open.

Anyone able to help me?

224/224 is a pretty easy cam to tune, you should be able to get away with no tuning for awhile.

I've got the TR224 112 LSA on my GTO and it runs ok without a tune. Stalls occasionally at a stop and SEL light (Po300, random misfire) but it is drivable for the most part. Waiting till the snow melts for the tune.

There's a video of it here somwhere....https://ls1tech.com/forums/pontiac-gto-2004-2006/431264-tr224-112-lsa-installed-vid.html

I'll venture to say with the Hotcam's valve events you'll have far more problems with it than a 224 114LSA. I've heard untuned 6 speeds Hotcams sit and hunt for idle for 30 secs untuned. My TR224 112 untuned would hunt for 5-10 secs at most. If you can't find a tuner I would look into a mail order tune form one of the US vendors here. It might not be as good as a full on dyno tune but lots better than none at all. TSP does MOT so you might want to check with them.

Like Phil said the TR224 will be fine right out of the box especially on a 114lsa

Oh God, I cannot wait, I just saw your vid clip and the 112 sounds lovely! I will put my order in any day now and get myself:

LS2 Timing Chain Set (ThunderRacing)
224/224 114 Cam (TR)
Crane Dual Valve Springs (Texas Speed)
Comp Cams "Comp R" Hydraulic Roller Lifters (TS)
Crane Cams Rocker Arm (TS)

I think my car would pick up some serious power after that little lot

I will try and get some vids up of it when its done! I may be able to find a guy over here who does American V8 tunes, just as long as the car get me to his!!! What sort of power increase you guys getting with your cams?
