Default cam w/no stall

Was thinking of doing the cam swap before I do the stall since my tranny is going out and I dont want to do tranny work 2x

So you think my 04 gto a4 would drive ok with a TSP228R?

ttt for ya, I'm interested although the problems you are going to have are either dying at stoplights a lot, or the car wanting to pull a lot when stopped (depending on where you have your idle set). Also its supposedly not going to feel right as the cam isn't going to have the bottom end the stock cam does, so when you punch it from a stop or low RPM its going to be a dog until it spins up.

i allready understand that it wont fully be as efficient compared to a cam w/stall but i dont race or go to the track...just want some more power and getup and go for daily driving and some lope

wait until you fix the tranny. then put in the stall and the cam. cam + !stall = shitty drivability.

technically it will work but the car will fall flat on its face at a low rpm wot because the converter will flash way below the power band. get the tranny fixed first and put in a big stall.

but what about just normal driving? And will surging be an issue with a small cam like the 228

Get the tranny fixed first then a good stall, I have the TCI SSF 3500 and I actually want to go larger, A stall will net you more than a cam will. Their site says 228/228, .588"/.588" @ .050 with your choice of LSA, so the cam shold be fairly mild but weather it will surge or not is all in the tune. If you run it with the stock tune I would think you would have some driveability problems. Good Luck

Fix the tranny, have a decent converter installed (at least 3200-3500 stall speed) THEN do the cam. If you tranny really is going out just fix it and do the converter now. Not only is a cam no a good idea on a stock converter from a performance aspect (not to mention the converter is a bigger improvement than a cam) but why spend time and money on one part of the car when another part is failing?

My cam is smaller than a 228 (hotcam), stock stall, and I get very slight surging on rare ocassions. Idle is set to about 750-800rpm. When it does happen, its when I decelerate to near idle speed without using the brakes.

well, i called tsp and they said I could run it on the stock stall with a 114lsa and a tune...the gto stock stall is 1800...the site lists the tsp288r as being 1600-6300

so I dont see why not.

I've got a SS3600 and a TSP 288R 114.
You should plan on a tune regardless.

Totally drivable. GREAT in fact.
