larger and better port design and smaller combustion chamber.

unless you get them cheap...Otherwise go with some of the vendors ported castings, prices are pretty decent for what you get...

Defentially go with a verners version.
PP and PRC have a LS6 stage 1 for under 1000 dollars and probally a bit cheeper if you send them springs.
TEA also has a stage 1 LS1 casting for a similar price.

LS6 heads are 210 cc runners, have an improved cumbustion chamber design, and D shaped exhaust ports, the valves are .6mm longer in 02 and newer, intake valves are hollow, the exhaust are sodium-potassium filled. LS1 heads have 200 cc runners and oval exhaust ports. The newer LS6 heads are spm castings and supposidly give around 5hp more than the sand cast heads.

If you have your own valvetrain you can use, we can sell you a set of CNC ported 243 castings that are bare. They will be ready for you to swap all of your valvetrain into. These would be $865.00 shipped to you anywhere in the US. These will have great flow numbers. If you wanted to send your valvetrain in, we could give you a price assembling the heads with your parts. If you wanted just a pair of 243 unported heads to bolt on, we can do a set assembled with OEM parts for $685.00 shipped to you. Give us a call and we will be glad to answer any questions you may have.

Can LS1 heads be economically ported to flow as well as LS6 heads? As ported LS6 heads? I mean if one prefers to retain a 241 casting? Also, without excessively opening the runner volume to beyond 220cc

Other question: What part of an LS1 head best benefits from porting? Is there a template for CNC porting these heads as is done with a LS6 head?

and one more: Do 2.02/1.57" valves assist the flow nos. of an LS1 head to make the cost worthwhile?

It is a pity no one can answer these questions regarding LS1 heads.

Ported LS6 heads will flow more than ported LS1 heads, and with the cost of 243s so cheap now, it doesn't make much sense to port LS1 ones.

Ported LS6 heads are about 230cc or so +/-. Negates part of the reason for using a ported 243 head. Runner volume is important if one believes the concept of flow velocity.

Stock LS6 appear to flow 10% higher than stock LS1, ported LS6 flow about 10% higher than stock LS6.

Do not see why I have to junk my LS1 heads if minor or moderate massaging will work. I do recall one ex-sponsor mildy ported an LS1 head and produced flow nos. comparable to a stock LS6 head. Wondering if higher values can be obtained with larger valves and a bit more judicious porting.

Note: Considering a mild street cam and so lift above .566 is not needed.
