Default Forged 346 short block?

In my future plans I would like to go with a forged bottom end with some pistons with valve reliefs so I can mill my heads to get about a 11.5:1 CR. Who are the most reputable shops to purchase one from? Or how difficult would it be to assemble the parts myself. I would enjoy doing something like that, not to save money really, just to do it cause I enjoy it. Just want to "test the waters" and get pleanty of info before the time comes

Lingenfelter. Great price too, you can't build it for what Ed sells them for.

Yes, when going bigger cubes the price increases quite a bit. I'd just buy the short and assemble the rest of the motor. To much precision goes into building a short block that you really need to know what you are doing and you need the right tools. I'm going to be getting my short block from speedinc. if things stay the same.

ok thanks. i really want to get into building motors and getting the right tools to do it. but maybe ill practice on something else lol. i want to get an early 70's t/a to build so maybe i will wait to learn on something i wont need to drive every day although this is prob a good few months before i do any of this.

now when i get the bottom end, is it complete or do i need to pull off all my stuff like the oil pan, oil pump, timing chain and all that? and are most pricesn generally around 3K?

Most prices are around $3,000. Yes you will need to pull everything off. A short block basically consists of the block, the crank, rods, pistons, rings, rod bolts, main studs, main caps, bearings. I don't even think the seals are included.

No, speedinc is awesome. I've ordered almost all of my stuff from them, they've helped me out a good deal.

I've got a several tsp parts but they are from the previous owner. I don't think I have ever dealt with them personally, however, all of their products are performing flawlessly. PRC dual springs, ported oil pump, double roller chain, true duals, and possibly more.

well i had an issue a while back with a bad price they gave me on heads that they couldnt honor which i based my h/c package around, really pissed me off. then i just got a ypipe from them that didnt fit worth a damn and it took them forever to get back in touch with me and when i finally called they said just go to a shop and have them fix it, after wasting 130 bucks on something that didnt fit. but tahts all i have to say about that, i dont want to get this thread off track. thanks for the info guys i will check into all of them. ive been on speed incs site and like what i see on there. id like some feedback from guys with shortblocks from these places to see how they are holding up.

I'm running a TSP 347 right now, and getting in touch with somoene up there only takes a single phone call. Its unfortunate that you have had bad luck with them - I'd suggest you give them another chance - its tough to beat their 347 packages.

HPE is another company I'd look into - Erik builds some wicked motors.
