I made exactly the change you're asking about except I had a 228/230 on a 112.
Changed from it to a 228R and picked up 28rwhp.
01 WS6, 6spd, stock heads, LT's, UDP and FAST 90.

Unless you can get the 228/230 REALLY cheap I'd spend the extra dough for a 228r and be done with it. To save a couple hundred bucks only to tear back into it and stick a different cam in it later isn't really worth it IMO.

When it comes to cams I have put a cam in because it's cheap only to be frustrated with performance and pull it back out, spending ~$100 on all the BS involved(balancer bolt, coolant, oil change, etc...) plus a weekend and then buying the right cam when I coulda just done it "right" the first time.
Say it goes for $200, you're saving $200 but making ~35hp less. Probably more if you have a FAST. So that's about $6/hp. I'd spend the $200 and buy a 228r.
Just my $.02

I highly doubt you would see an extra 35hp going from the xr281hr to a 228r.

Doubt all you want, I tuned it on the same dyno so results should be comparable. Weather was a little cooler when I ran the 228 on it but only about 10*.
I'm not going to argue about it, that was my experience.
