Lol, seems like anytime anyone ever tries to look up a cam on their site it is the only cam that doesnt show up!

They are XE lobes, not XE-R.

228 = comp cam lobe # 3717
230 = comp cam lobe # 3718

An XE-R cam with same durations would be 228/230 - .588/.592

XE-R lobes:
228 = comp cam lobe # 3724
230 = comp cam lobe # 3725

FYI.

To determine whether you have XE-R lobes or not, subtract the duration at .050 from the duration at .006. If the result is 49 or less, then you have XE-R lobes; i.e., a 'steeper' ramp.

I think the "R" just means RPM, as the XE lobes are called Extreme RPM as the camshaft type.

i have that cam on a 112 lsa. made 380rwhp cam only without ls6 intake or ported tb. it pulls like a raped ape from 2500 up. i love it great driveability nice lope. no track times yet. need a clutch then some drag radials. they are xe lobes by the way.

I have a similar cam with dyno and track times in the sig. The 114 lsa really tames the idle.

I think the appeal with them now is that they're fairly easy on the valvetrain compared to all the latest lobes that are out now. The trade off, of course is less hp/tq then the "latest-an-greatest" lobes. I still see the xe lobes used in custom grinds and some of the new shelf grinds now available because they still offer very good valvetrain stability compared to the newest lobes.

thats what i keep reading, that the valvetrain is less abused with these cams. is there really that much of a hp/tq trade off between somthing like a 228R with .588 compared to 228/230 with .571? id image that high RPM hp would only be the real trade off right?

I don't think you'd be giving up a lot, the xe lobes are still more aggressive then a lot of other cam grinders lobes. Well as far as where in the power band you'd make less power I'm not to sure, but you would have better high rpm valvetrain stability than with the xer lobes. Also you could go with a custom grind with xe lobes, but just take it up 1 lobe size to a 230/230 or 232 and run a little more advance to offset the power difference.

oh ok, just wondering. ive seen alot of thread on these comp 228/230 cams. Ive been looking around at cams and alot of people recommend for mild applications between 224 and 228 is a good cam size for us relitivly stock 5.7s. ive been dead set on 228R but if a good deal on a 228/230 cam came up, It woundnt be a bad compromise would it?

there is a lot of power to be had with this smallish cam. i will be adding a set of heads and injectors over the winter, we'll see how she does.

I am running the same cam w/ PRC 5.3's stg. 2.5, Fast 90/90, and every other Bolton and made 430/400. The car drives like stock and does 25 mpg highway. I am sure I could get another 15 hp from a bigger cam but this drives great and sounds solid. I had a hell of a time finding anything information on this cam as well. I purchased a long block after my engine called it quits and this cam was already installed. I am glad I didn't waste anymore money upgrading.
