3.905 is a standard over bore when rebuilding an engine. With a stock stroke of 3.622 it is 347 CI as stated above. I believe all head gaskets for a small bore measure out at 3.910.

correct. its a 347. honed to 3.905 bore, stock 3.622 stroke
can someone tell me what my "deck height" is?

i keep getting a pretty common answer of 11.3 and 12.1 (depending on if i use "-" for the piston being above the deck, if i do it gives me 12.1)
so can someone tell me what my "deck height" is by the specs i listed on the first post?

Deck height is the height difference between the cylinder head mating surface of the block and ther tops of the pistons at TDC, the top of the stroke. A minus measurement usually signifies that the piston protrudes above the top of the block, and thus its area times said height (e.g. 0.008") must be subtracted from the combustion volume.

What madBill said.

Pretty much the distance from the top of the deck to the top of the piston whether it be in or out of the hole. IN the hole is a positive number, OUT of hole is a negetive number.

Usually, one measures the deck height as per above 2 posts and combines it with the gasket thickness to arrive at the quench/squish clearance. Your specs have quench and gasket specs, so the deck height must be: 0.052" - 0.039" = 0.013", In other words, the pistons are 0.013" out of the block.

How did you measure quench on this motor? Usually you have to physically measure the POH ( piston out of the hole ) to determine it.

email i just got back.......

"This is Bryan w/ LME.
>
>The Deck height is 9.225. The crank, rod piston combination come out to
>9.240. So the piston is .015" out of the hole at TDC. I use a number of .054 for
>the GM MLS head gasket. With a .054 gasket you will be at .039" quench. It is
>fine to use .052" also. You will then be at .037" quench. Your compression w/ a
>58cc head w/ a 3.910 bore gasket & .037 quench is 11.56:1. and it will be
>11.50:1 w/ .039 quench."
