Isn't the biggest problem in higher HP applications the pistons disentegrating not the rods breaking.

KP made around 700rwhp with his D1, stock crank/rods/LS1 block and forged pistons without failure running high 9's@137mph+.

Here he upgraded to better rods simply for peace of mind:

One doesn't hear of many stock rods failing.... it is normally the pistons first with forced induction/nitrous. If it were me I'd put in some $400 rods as it won't add much to the buildup.

the stock rods can take quite a bit of abuse. they're powder forged and fairly high quality. 600rwhp with a resonable redline is not a problem for them. i spin my stock rods to 7k constantly (with arp rod-bolts that is), they've got 45k on them too. i've got several people in my car club using stock rods running 550+ rwhp and have been for a while now.

LS1 rods are stronger then any OEM 350 or LT1 rod. It'd be good to upgrade, but honestly with ARP bolts, lightweight pistons, and good machine work and balancing, those stock rods should be fine to 600rwhp. Details like studded mains, good bearings, good rod bolts, good machine work go a long way toward a reliable motor.

IMO, people on here tend to overbuild their motors. There's nothing wrong with that at all, especially with prices for aftermarket pieces, but look back and see what people have done with a stock rebuild (from a good machine shop) on a 350 with aftermarket pistons. Spinning to 7000+ on that type of setup was no big deal as long as the valvetrain was up to it. I certainly don't think this is anything LS1's couldn't handle, if not more.

I think you will be just fine with the stock rods....but honestly, while you've got it part and balanced I would go with a QUALITY rod, and not a freakin chinese made Eagle either....Id go stock or Callies, or Lunati

I think I may just go with a Scat I-beam, i's made out of 4340 steel which is alot tougher than Eagles 5140 and already has the ARP's. I can get a set for $220 brand new-that's probably cheaper than resizing my stock rods, polishing them and getting some ARP's. I just don't want to get too far into this car. I just want to go forged as the stock pistons won't take too much abuse and i want a reliable setup for me and to whoever buys the car. I really have my eyes set on a new Z06.

Hey Arun

It’s the rpm you need to be careful with when running the stock rods, not so much the HP. If you were staying under 6300rpm I would say the stockers would be fine but for the price why limit yourself. Good set of rods with stock crank will run 7200rpm no problem.

Personally I would buy a 6.125 rod and matched piston and sell the pistons you have now.
