This is typical of all 16 of the lifters I pulled from my engine, slight scoring you can't feel with your finger nail. Also slight wear bar around the roller but you can't feel that either. All the rollers have smooth movement.

So what do you think?

Replace them while they're out. It's cheap insurance. You can get a set for under $100.

Rollers look good. No pitting or anything that you can feel and they roll smooth. I'll probably replace them anyway. BTW, I'm in search of an anoying "tick" that's been bothering me ever since I've had the car.

The lifter looks like it has seen some heat. It's also not the prferred lifter with the open body around the roller. I would replace the lfters.

Ebay. Even Summit Racing has them for around $125 for a set.

Id say that lifter is okay, but like the others said, might as well replace them now. The side is nothing to worry about. I cant see the roller well enough to tell in tha pic, but if you say its good, than you dont likely have a problem with them.

I don't know if I would trust a set of lifters that cost around $100 or so. But I do plan on replacing them, the only problem now is trying to decide what lifters to use. I'm thinking either the comp replacement lifter or perhaps the Morels.

Something else to think about. With all the current lifter threads, do you suppose the new generation of steep ramped camshafts is beginning to take it's toll on lifters. It appears the rollers are taking a beating from some of the pics I've seen. Just thinking out loud.

I don't know if their taking a toll on lifters, but I think its a major cause of the ticking and "sewing machine" noises everyone is posting.

Bryan when you say "the prferred lifter with the open body around the roller" you mean like the Comp OE's? Thanks...

there are ones that are open all the way up like yours and ones that only expose the bottom half of the roller both are stock.

Thanks. My Comp 850's expose only the bottom half of the roller. I was wondering if Bryan preferred the "open" or "bottom half" lifters and why...

How many miles do you have on these lifters? They are showing heat, I would what to know why they are showing heat. I also would take a very close look at the lifter bores.
If you just replace the lifters without finding out why they have heat in them your new lifters are going to look the same as the old ones. From the picture it looks like a lot of heat has been through the lifter.
What was your oil pressure like before you pull the motor down? Did you find any trash in the oil?
You can pm me if you like, if you have any more pictures I'd be happy to take a look, better to be safe than sorry.

open is not preffered by anyone. That is why the aftermarket makes them half exposed like the later OEM are. He meant that the pictured "open body" should be replaced regardless. If they were the closed type (OEM), he may be able reuse them.

It is kinda like the crappy old clutch hydrualics. Whether it is causing a problem or not, it should be replaced.

Again, thanks. However if that is true and Morel's are supposed to be the best, then why do the look like this: Morel Lifter Picture P.S. I'm not trying to be an a**hole, I'm just trying to decide whether to replace my Comp 850's with the best lifter

They are stock with about 20k miles on them. Just checked lifter bores tonight and they all appear to fine. Oil pressure is fine at about 30 psi hot at idle and 50 psi when cruising.

I just ordered a set of Mellings which are fully encapsulated so we'll see how they pan out.

As said above. The preferred lifter has the lifter body extending down over a portion of the roller. Like the 850's or others. We replace the style of lifter that is pictured. Regardless of condition.
