Default ticking noise??

ya so my 02 Z28 with only 25k miles is making a noticeable ticking noise at idle and when reved up a litle (cant tell if it does it at higher rpms though). is this piston slap? is it normal to happen with only 25k miles? if i were to instal a D1 in the near future would i be taking a chance at something internally breaking?

if it's only at idle when cold and goes away it's usually a lifter trying pump up withoil, if it moves along with rpm all the time it's usually a bent pushrod or loose rocker. ls1 are notorious for the lifter and pushrods noises, my car does the same when cold.

Does it sound like THIS?
This was my car after getting the lifters changed to 'improved design lifters' under factory warranty. It was around 24,000 miles. The new lifters didn't change a thing.
They extended my warranty to 68,000 miles because I complained so much.
It now just turned 35,000 today and makes the same exact noise, hot, cold, idle, when ever. If I rev it up for a minute it goes away for a while and slowly comes back.
This is not piston slap.

HAHAHA yup thats the sound. As you rev the engine, the ticks tick along with how fast your car is revving.

It could be your oil pick-up tube O-RING causing the oil to aerate. I'v heard it alot. Mine does it, 12000 miles on the clock. Still runs hard.

But when I idle it back down it goes away for a few minutes, then slowly comes back, like the lifters bleed down too fast or something.
After I gave up on the dealer I took the rockers and pushrods out and nothing was wrong with anything, pushrods were straight.

I've also heard a few cars with the noise, a guy I work with just bought a used one, same exact car as mine. He said it makes no noise. He brought it over one day and I sure as hell heard it, not quite as loud as mine though.

Also, not sure if it matters but his is a 2002 built in 8/01 and mine built in 06/02, similiar miles. I know mine has a LS6 block. And I've been told my car runs the 1/4 mile on the fast side for a stock car.
It is embarrasing when old ladies and other people who know nothing about cars say it's making a funny noise. (and GM says it's normal).

dealer said they checked mine, it's always had good oil pressure too.

I had the same problem as well. spent a week trying to find the cause. Finally figured out one of my spark plugs was loose. Check your plugs and wires.

I have the same problem. How was/is your oil pressure with the bad o-ring?

I've got the same ticking sound and it definitely sounds like it's coming from #7. In other words, it is coming from the driver's side rear of the motor. I've got new MSD wires, new plugs, checked the pushrods, rockers, valve springs and found nothing wrong. My next step is to check the injectors to see if I have an issue. If I can't giure it out, I'll drive it till it dies then swap in a 402 ls2.

I had MSD wires too recently installed and one went bad rather quickly....thats when I ordered 8 new OEM ones, and the ticking noise went away...but I think I said that above haha.

Im curious, how did you know it went bad?? I'm not doubting you, just trying to understand what to look for. I've swapped the plug wires left to right, front to back, and it remains the same, the ticking is coming from the rear of the driver's side.

I have the exact same problem on the exact same side. I checked the pushrods and they were okay. I changed the wires, and the noise is still there. I am leaning towards a bad lifter. Taking it to a local ls1 shop on monday.

I agree. Mine had the same noise and dealer replaced the o-ring and that cured the noise.

My car makes the exact same sound and it's driving me crazy. The sound comes from the front lower end of the engine.

oh damn mine doesnt sound nearly that bad...its just a light ticking noise not anything that loud. i also noticed today when i started her up in the cold there was no ticking that i could hear but once it warmed up it came back. this could be due to the higher idle when warming up? but when warm i do still slightly hear it if i rev it up a little.....
