Those that have had lifter/cam failure or damage, did you find metal shavings in your oil? If so, it seems like that would be an easier test than pulling the heads and/or cam.

Oh ****. So does all this mean that I have to get rid of my FM14 and buy a T-Rex cam instead? I will NOT have another problem with my car and if the Futral cams have been show to be falty, then I'll get rid of it before I assemble my new engine.

So I need a yes or no anwser for this one fellas, sorry to hijack the thread but I'm sure other Futral cam owners want to know as well.

Nope, that was the first thing I checked after the noise started. Even yesturday when I drained the oil (which I just changed last weekend right before the noice started) I didnt find any particles at all on the drainplug or in the oil.

I have been reading this post. There is a lot of mix responses. A lot of people have said it's due to a bad batch of cams the were made, and had Futral replace their cams due to this. I just want to know if I should replace my cam. Is there a way to tell if my cam is bad before its too late? I only had it in my car for about 6,000 before I spun a bearing.

I have an F13 that was purchased in the later part of May. I've had the blower whine noise since the cam was installed. I'm pulling my heads tonight or tomorrow and I'll let you guys know what I find.

BTW, this is in an LS6 crate motor.

This cam also had a slight whistle or whine the entire time since it was installed back in May '05.

My symptoms were this:

A ticking or light clapping noise (like a golf-clap), happens in a quick series of 3-5 ticks or claps. There was 1-2 seconds between the series of ticks/claps. Heard well from inside the car while at constant speed, accel/decel. Hard to hear at idle or at cruising speeds (65+ MPH). Car was normal one day, then had the noise the next morning when it was started.....only the noise was much louder when it first started, then got quieter after about 25 miles of driving.

Even GM had a bad batch of Hot Cams a few years back that had the same problem, so it can happen to any company.

when you guys talk about this noise, how severe is it?

and this whine, is it a constant noise? the clapping sound i hear in my car at times but it seems like this noise is common when using pushrods too small. i just want to knwo if there is something distinctive that will tell you clues towards this happening, that way if any of us hear something we dont keep driving the car like that lol

I think I might call Futral tomorrow and see what they say. Maybe I can get a replacement to be safe.

Basically sounds like a valve out of adjustment. Very noticable between 2-3k rpms. Most likely cause is lifter is not able to stay pumped up because of excessive lifter to bore clearance. The problem is amplified by stiffer valve springs and smaller base circle cams, just like Cstraub has been saying all along.

I talked with Futral today. Allan said the bad cams were recieved in the April/May 2005 timeframe. I bought mine in early March 2005, so they said I am likely OK if nothing bad has happened yet. Not sure how comforting that is.

FWIW, I have the nearly correct 7.425" pushrods needed for my setup, and my valvetrain is pretty quiet. I don't get much of the "sewing machine" sound (I do get the wonderful piston slap though ).
