Default what does this white puff of smoke mean...........

I opened my hood this morning before the first start of the day to check my fluids. I usually never start it with the hood open so I never noticed this.

I started it up and immediately a thin cloud/puff of white smoke came out from behind the motor. Smelled like burning oil. After the engine was running for about 15 seconds it was all gone, no more smoking. I have absolutely no oil dripping on the ground anywhere or anywhere on the motor, or underneath the motor/car, but I'm burning alot of oil. I came home from Orlando (220 miles) and I was down 1-1/2 quarts, it was topped off when I left.

How does smoke puff out of a motor somewhere and not leak onto the ground?

It looked like it came from the back side of the engine wherethe flywheel is.

White smoke would mean headgasket if you were down on coolant, but not as likely for oil. I would check your PVC connections and see if youre venting gasses out somewhere. Check the hose that wraps around the back of the intake. If it was a rear main seal (by the flywheel) you would be leaking im sure.

I've been leaking coolant for awhile now, about 2 cups every 3-4 days.

Can the oil burn through the gasket leak but not leak onto the ground when sitting at idle or truned off in park?

Sounds like you could have a head gasket problem.

A couple off the cuff things to look for. Your oil pressure sender is on the top of the motor back in that area...could be leaking. Any smoke at all coming out of the exhaust? Could have some leaky valve seals. Maybe look at your header gaskets and make sure nothing is leaking there.

I get a nice little cloud/puff of smoke on initial start up every time, but it goes away immediately. Also, when I'm cruising at any speed steadily down the road or highway, and than I go WOT I make a BIG cloud of smoke at the instant I hit the pedal, than it goes away completely as I stay on the gas.

When the head gaskets get replaced, if I take the heads to a head shop to have the seals replaced and double springs installed, do I need a new dyno tune?

To check for a blown head gasket, get a pressure tester from autozone and pressurize the cooling system for a few minutes. No need to start the car. If it leaks down....BLOWN gasket or you will see water coming out somewhere. Only takes a few minutes. Id say you are about 90% odds of having a blown headgasket.....with your stroker that could easily be caused by a SLEEVE that has dropped. not good in that case.

No, no new tune will be needed. You can easily change the valve seals yourself, its not hard. All it takes is a pair of pliers, a deep socket (to fit over the valve stem) and a hammer to tap them home.
