Default So...who wants to talk me out of another 224 cam??

I'm looking at different cams for my z (currently stock) and in my previous car I had the LPE GT2-3 cam, TR224-114, and the FM2-112 (224). I'll be the first one to say that the overall performance of the 224 cams is great. Power everywhere in the powerband....easy to drive everyday...easy to tune...great street manners.

The car I have now is a manual so I'm thinking I can get away with a bigger cam, whereas before I had to be careful since the car was an automatic and they are a little more finicky when it comes to cams.

Awaiting installation is an LS6 intake, QTP headers, ORY, and Mufflex 3.5" catback. The exhaust should breathe very well...the intake system is probably more a restriction between the two...

So...I will have a 6500 rpm shift point and the car will retain the 3.42s and be basically full weight. Does anyone else have these mods with a cam only setup and what kind of power are you making? What cam do you have? What's your recommendation?

I am considering the TR224, TR227/224, TR230/224, TR230/236....TSP 228R, Torquer v2....MTI Steath II....but I want something that drives nice and isnt a bitch to tune.

And I'd like to hit 400rwhp with just a cam. Need some opinions and real world info. I've searched

Thanks,
Mike

I'd prolly give the Trak, F13/f14, TSP 228R, and Torquer a good look. I have been looking into a cam for my car for somtime now and the f13/14, Torquer seem to be making some good power, a nice step up from the 224/224 and not as big as the MS3 and other big cams.

Dude definatly go big. The TSP 233/239 or 231/237(or something like that) will give you great power and wont be that hard to tune. Youll love something that big, plus it will have a wicked lope.

The problem with going with a bigger cam is your 342 gears. If you are staying with these gears I wouldn't go bigger than the 224. I would just match them to a set of budget ported LS6 heads in the future to get your power goal. Your car will be a dog from a light with even an F13 and those gears.

I like both of mine. 224/230 and 244/248....2 different animals though that is for damn sure!

Well....the 3.42s will stay until I can fund a 12 bolt, then I'll go with 4.10s.

I saw a dyno graph comparison of a TR224 vs the FM13...the TR cam made more hp and tq until 5800rpm (where the graph ended). To me that would be great for the street, since I wont usually be turning 6000rpm. The 224 isnt a bad sounding cam either and not overly lopey.

Maybe a 226 or 228 cam would be a good median?

Any info on split duration cams with my mods above? I would think the cam should favor the intake over the exhaust...but maybe I'm wrong. I've never taken a ggod look at cams like the 227/224 or similar...

I haven't heard of any great results using the reverse split duration cams. I would look at AFR's 224/228 cam, it seems to make good power for a smaller cam.

3.42's biggest I would go would be 228-230 duration. Anything more would be a major dog. I'm going 4.10's with the 224 in the future.

Im kinda in the same boat Mike. I will gow tih 4.11's when I need a 12 bolt. I dont want to swap cams 2X though. Im really leaning towards the TSP torquer on a 112. It will be a good frum roller with the 3.42's

Get an F14, thats what I plan to get soon... (ish)

Sounds like it keeps a stock low end but give you a nice mid, and a screaming high end..

Reports of 390-415 peak hp, and similar torque from the threads and graphs I've seen.

The only thing bad about the Futral cams is the 2 month wait.

I have a FMS F4 cam and love it, 226/226/ 575/575 114lsa. I just wish it was on a 112 just for a lil lower end grunt. Great sounding, pulls hard up to 6500 and not driveablity problems.

Whats up guy long time. No I havent gotten it dynoed with just my new cam. I did get it dynoed with that cam and MMS stage 2 heads. Hit right at 400 with clogged cats and that stupid 85mm MAF. I need to take that bitch off lol. I'm guessing with a good tune and with not cat problems I should be hitting 415 or so.

ive had a f10 114 and hit 378/372 with it. the power felt great all over. i really think there was alot more left in that cam, but i went with the f13 112. once i get it tuned it should prove to be a bad *** cam. ghetto tuned and numbers in sig.

Of those listed, the TR 230/224 is best cam for your needs.

A 228/228 111 108 would make great torque. With 3.42s, the key is to keep your IVC early and LSA low to make good low end and midrange torque. With a good exhaust installed you could even run a 228/224 110 108. That will give a very strong midrange and still pull to 6300. If I had 3.42s, I'd actually advance it another degree, but I like lots of low end power on the street.

If you want the max power, order them on LSK lobes (e.g. 227 and 223 lobes).
