Default building a ls1 383

aight. well a friend of mine has a 97 camaro that i'm getting from him. we're going to build a 383 for it and I want it to be ls1 based. He can get just about anything i need. so. I know i need vortec heads and all that. What I'm unsure of is how i'm going to control the fuel system. Could I use aftermarket ls1 parts (fuel rail, pump, injectors) and get a ls1 computer and just have it tuned? same thing with the electrical system?

You might want to go to a junk yard and get a Ls1 with the computer and the harness. Then have a sponsor build you a short block. The reason for the junk yard moter is. Oil pan, Timing cover, Gally cover, Rear cover, Oil dip stick, Oil pick up tube, Oil baffle, Knock sensors, Crank sensor, Cam sensor, Oil pressure sending unit, coolant temp sending unit, Coolant drain plugs in block, Ls6 intake(if 01/02), crank pully, and any of the front accsesories that wont cross over from the lt1. Then you will need LS? based Heads and cam (not sure what you mean by vortec heads), lifters, lifter trays, Oil pump, Fly wheel/clutch, and entire engine gasket kit, Hope you have a big check book, good luck.

Is the 97 a Z28? Build up the LT1. It would be easier and about the same price to buy a 98 LS1 Z28 as to make your LT1 97 one. The LS1 is totally different from a LT1, and a vortec engine is different from them yet. You can raplace traditional SBC heads with Vortec heads if you change intakes but that is it. All 3 engines have good stuff but parts can not be mixed.

yeah. i knew the lt-1 and ls were way different. no the car is a V6. its in great shape other than the fact that the girl that was driving it blew it up. gettin it for $500. this will prolly take about a year to build. I basicly want to find the best way to build a 383 with fuel injection. it will see the street a little (no emissions here) but mostly going to be a track car. if anyone has any sugestions on how i should go about building this I'd greatly appreciate it.

You can get a LS1 complete with PCM harness (brand new) from SDPC for about $7500.
Stick a cam and some headers and tuning and you have a brand new beast.
But do your research, since, fuel, cooling system, tranny etc... will cost also.
IMO, get the V6, for 500, drop a J-yard V6 in it. Sell it, then take that money towards a 98/99 Z28. More cost effective for sure.

well the thing is we already have the parts for the 383 (minus pistons). and at this point it would take a while to save up to get a newer car like that. I just think that building a motor and putting it in this would be my best bet. so is geting a j-yard ls1 a bad idea or somthin? i mean i'm sure its alot cheaper and i'm going to have it completely apart to do a .30 overbore and put the new bottom end in. I just really want fuel injection and ls1 has alot of aftermarket and stuff. i mean would i be better off just building a SBC and getting an aftermarket EFI setup from Edlebrock (example) or somthin?
