ok well i have the oppurtunity to get LS6 heads for around 100 bucks that came off of a 04 GTO, she upgraded to patriot heads. well install on heads and a cam is outragious and would cost me close to $1000 dollars to install both at the shop i go to, now my question is me and a friend know how to work on cars and we are currently putting a 305 together and installing it into a S-10 and he has a 350 ready to go into his Iroc we are redoing. now i am wanting to install heads and a cam on my car, is it really all that difficult or is it pretty easy as long as you double check and tighten everything to specs, b/c i love working on my car and cant see forking out that kind of money when i could do it myself with my friend. i will have the LS6 heads ported and i am gonna go with the MS3 cam which i was told by Zach at texas-speed is a perfect combo and match up perfectly. who here did there own head/cam install and how long did it take along with any problems i might run into, now this will be my summer project as i am in school right now and this is my DD so cant afford to not have a car.

I will always tell people to do it themselves. I did mine myself as well. All 3 cams.
I would say comp "r" or Morels as far as lifters go.

You will be just fine. Just take your time and get a nice cold 18 pack. that is the number one tool you will need.

lol yeah that would help, the only thing i dont get about the whole write up on the heads and cam swap is the tightening of the head bolts, you tighten them and then you go back again a second time to tighten them again thats what i dont get. and isnt there 15 bolts on each head thats alot of going back and retightening, but better to do it then not do it.

I think the reason you go back and tighten the a 2nd and 3rd time is because they're torque to yeild bolts.

I hate to be the one to give you the bad news, but the 04 GTO came with a regular old LS1 engine, which means it has 241 cast LS1 heads, not LS6. Only the 2005+ GTO's that came with the LS2 motors had the 243 cast LS6 heads. If youre going to have them ported anyway, It's still a fine upgrade.

Ive worked on many cars, and in my opinion my LS1 was really easy. once you get the coil packs off and make urself a little room in the engine bay, its really simple.

heres a good recent thread
