Slowly rotate the motor, coat the cylinder walls with oil, and then rotate some more. All the junk will hang up in the oil on the cylider walls and you can clean it out.

Berryman B12 carb/choke cleaner, it comes in an aerosol can, you can find it at any parts store. I usually keep a few cans around my shop, works great.

Just make sure that product used is not abrasive to aluminum as certain products can make the surface porous after use. (not good)

About an hour and half of work with B12, scotch brite and elbow grease. Waste of time? Maybe. Sure looks a whole lot better though.

I used a shop vac and a razor blade when I first swapped heads on the 346. Then finished up with a little cleaner and cheese cloth. Looked great afterwards.

I used a scotch brite pad and WD-40 to clean the deck and pistons. It looked like the pic above. I say do it.

When doing this, and cleaning the head gasket off, the only thing you covered was the lifter holes?

You don't want to get any of the gasket material / crap down in the waterjackets that surround the pistons either.

What is the best way to clean the deck without getting stuff falling into the waterjackets / bolt holes?

I agree! Unless you want your engine to end up burning oil leave it alone. For those that go through the trouble of cleaning the pistons you DO realize its going to look much the same after 2 to 3000 miles.....

I've got a question guys..

I just started cleaning my pistons.. I've got one looking verrrrry nice.. Anyway, my pops is helping me on the H/C swap and he asked why I was doing that when they are just going to be dirty again in 6 months..

So.. now I have a very nice #2 piston and the rest are "stock" dirty..

I don't mind cleaning the other 7, but my question is.. would it cause any problems to just put it back together with 7 dirty pistons and 1 clean piston?
