Heads w/o a cam?
I am looknig for soemthing the most stretable and with good gas mileage and reliability. Would it be wise for me to get a set of decent heads and not gonig with a cam, or possibly getting a small cam way later?

Some 5.3 heads would give you some power that would work well in the future with a cam. you will see a good gain with it just running on the stock cam. My question is why heads and not cam? You are going to still want some supporting mods either way. Are you a M6 or A4? I would suggest (if you are an A4) getting a converter before delving into the engine bay.
FWIW: Gas mileage and reliability doesnt go well in the same thread as heads and cam. lol!

Actually the best head only swap would be a AFR 205 with .040 gaskets (milled for a 11.2:1 SCR)
Gas mileage will improve as well as power and throttle response.
That is how good those babies are.
You should be able to see a good 50 rwhp on something like that.

So, if a person just put on a set of those afr 205's and kept the stock cam, would the car behave and drive exactly like stock except for having the "extra 50 hp" over stock?
How much tuning would go into only a head swap?
So, you are saying with those heads on a full bolt-on m6 car you could get almost 400 rwhp without losing stock drivability?
thanks...
