Cheapest way to obtain a 408??
I was wondering what the best and perferrably cheapest way to obtain a 408. Would you suggest buying a short block new and then building, or what. Opinions and suggestions please. Also, are 408's forged? Or do you have to have them forged?

cheapest : Stealing it I'm kidding of course!
Check out Speedinc: http://www.ls1speed.com/enginepackages.cfm
Their Aluminum 402 is even cheaper, and no core required!

The word "Cheap" and 408 dont really play nice together. There are two 6.0L iron blocks assembled minus the top ends for sale in the sale section. $350. Thats a start, then all you need, its a crank, rods, pistons, machine work, rings, bearings, arp bolts, timing setup, heads, cam, & so on. I guess the cheapest way would be buy the stuff then build it yourself. But then again you may come out about the same.

Honestly you can buy one already built just about as cheap as you building one from the ground up. Texas Speed, Speed inc, just to name a couple off the top of my head have some very good deals. Plus you dont have to mess with it. Not near as much down time involved. The reason they are cheaper is because the speed shops have accounts with all of the aftermarket dealers on parts and they get a better discount than joe public does. Therefor they can turn around and make it a little bit cheaper for the consumer. If I was to venture a guess they probably are only making their profit off of there labor involved and very little in part markup. Hope this helps your descision.

I reused most of my gaskets (only replaced the oil pan gasket), and re-used the pushrods and timing chain from my cammed setup.
I bought a new shortblock, cam, oil pump, lifters, AFR 225 heads, GM MLS headgaskets, ARP headstuds and spent approximately $8000 including tax on some items and additional machining on the heads.
