Default Water in Oil?

I just checked my oil a few minutes ago (Car has sat for about 4 hours) and I noticed a white substance at the tip of my dipstick when I check the oil.

I've also noticed a ticking noise coming from the engine too (Must be cylinder #5 because it's also throwing a cylinder # 5 misfire SES code.)

What in the hell is going on??

Have a blown a piston ring? Why/How would water be in my oil???

Quite a few people have told me that it could just be a blown headgasket or cracked head....

Any suggestions/thoughts/comments??? Thanks everyone. I've heard that ls1tech is the place to get good help.

Sounds like a blown head gasket to me, do a compression check.

What should the compression be? What would it be if the headgasket were blown?

Whoops I was reading too fast, yours sounds a little different. Have you checked the oil cap to see if it looks normal? You might want to change the oil and have it analyzed.

Sounds like a blown head gasket to me. I'd stop driving it immdiately until you figure out if that's it or not. You could save your self a ton of $$$.

Hi
I would first pull the # 5 plug - easier to remove. Look at the plug and then do a compression test on that cylinder - 1, 3, & 5 - that should tell you if you have a problem or not. Those plugs are easy to get at.

How hard is it to replace a head gasket on an LS1? Is it something that I could do? I'm no ASE mechanic, but I'm pretty mechanically inclined. (If I take it apart, I can usually remember how to put it back together.)

If your only going to do the drivers its not to bad.I would do both sides just to have everything fresh and to make sure there is no other problems.Being your first time just take your time. There's a write up on Ls1howto.com for changing heads. You could use that write up for swapping the gaskets.Just jot down all the parts you need down on paper and make sure you have everything before you start.Like fresh coolant/oil/new gaskets/new head bolts, etc.
