Default COuple questions on 408 buildup

Assembling the short block ... which way do the flat side of the valve reliefs go? What about dropping the pistons in without rings to check bottom end specs and any clearance issues. Will it hurt the cylinders or the pistons with them not having rings on??

May sound silly, but I just want to be sure on the valve reliefs.

Flat side of the reliefs go toward the valley.

Now .. anyone know if no rings during mock up will hurt anything?

Lightly oil the cylinder walls and piston sides as well as the rod bearings and rod journals. It won't hurt a thing. Also, lightly oil the main bearings and main journals before placing the crank in the block. It's actually a good idea to check out things like his ahead of the actual assembly. It's good to ask questions too.

I wanted to check all the clearnaces before it goes to the machine shop for balancing.

Will WD40 work or something a little heavier?

Hi on my 408 build did a dummy assembly of one piston with rings on. I know for a fact putting a piston in the bore with no rings will scratch it for sure. putting a set of rings on a piston will take all of 10 minutes. You would want to spin the crank with the rod piston bolted in to check clearences, I dont think you would acheive that with no rings. Lay your main bearings, oil bearings well with non friction mod oil, lay in crank place bearings in caps oil well and bolt a few caps down and give it a slow spin then assemble a rod and piston with rings. oil bore well slide rod and piston in its assigned bore, place in rod bearings oil well and torque bolts down give it a spin. or do what you need to check. The main area to look at is the crank reluctor wheel and piston clearence. I also put the windage tray on to get an idea how far rods will clear no nead to bolt down. good luck. Max
Ps what pistons are you using.

Huh? The curve goes towards the valley (up) and the flat side goes down.

IE the deepest part of the relief is up.

As stated above,
To do a mock up assembly, that is what it is an assembly. Then it is blueprinted and could be torn down again for clearancing, changing bearings etc...
IMO, judging by your experience, just take all the parts to the shop and have them do it.
If you know them well they should let you watch to gain knowledge.
Otherwise the 200$$ you save from assembling yourself might cost 10X that at the end.

The problem is I have is waiting on a ring filer. The rings are file fit and won't go right now. I'd like to check all that while I wait on the filer, but looks like I'll just have to wait.

Predator, thanks for the great advice of having it built. If I were going to do that in the first place, I wouldn't be here asking questions. You learn nothing if you never try. In other words ... you must try before you succed.

That's what I get for staying up to late. Thanks for clearing that up for future reference.
