well, the way i did it in school was with a degree wheel to the crankshaft snout. made a pointer out of coat hanger and fastened it to the front of the engine. I started to type out the procedure i used to degree but relaized its way long and hard to describe. i will if you want the info thou.

No you don't have to do all that, I've degreed a few in the lsX's. I was just wondering what method some of these guys use. I was wondering if they do anything defferant with some of the custome grond cam profiles.

I do the piston stop method to find TDC, then check everything right off the lifter or head as you normally would. It's kinda funny before I knew how to degree a cam, I was trusting another company to grind the cam right. Now that I know how to, I wouldnt put a cam in without degreeing it!! It's really not all that hard............

Find TDC with the piston stop method, then we have a tool that goes in the lifter bore and rides on the cam with a dial on it. Then I find what degree the engine is at .020" either side of max lift on the intake lobe. Subtract the two numbers, divide by two, and add to the lowest number of the two. And trusting the cam to be right on isn't good. I've seen them be as far as 3* off from what they were supposed to be.

Thanks I've been going by the Comp instructions was just wondering if any of you guys do it defferantly. I've been finding TDC by screwing a piston stop in the spark plug hole. Then put the dail on top of the rocker arm right over the top of the push rod. Is that what yall do with a heads on cam install?

Well, if your degreeing with a brand new chain (which you SHOULD be) then the slack is minimal, 1 degree of effect at most in what I've seen

Sorry but it will throw you off more than that even with a new chain..... Point being it goes to show that most people don't know how to properly degree a cam. Since I worked at Comp I ran across people like you all the time. Think they knew how to properly degree a cam and they didn't. Not trying to offend...it's just plain fact.

I think he means turning the engine backwards beyond the check point (ususally .050 before max lift) to max lift - .100, then turning back towards max lift until you reach the check point. Whether you use .050 or .020, the process and end results should be the same.
