Spin the cam over quickly a few times to sling them up. The rod will not go in if the lifter is in the way. that is a good way to find out. Don't pull the cam out untill you have hit the back of the motor.

Exactly what he said. You should spin the cam before you try to put the dowels in.

Do it ASAP. It is almost imperative to get the oil out and new oil in after it has ran for a bit. You don't want all the metal and grit that stays in that oil that the cam install took place with.

oh I almost forgot. If you need a visual I have taken pictures of mine both times with magnets and one with dowels. I have gone through roughly 5 cams in this car.

When I did it I had a hard time, but I used the aluminum rods. The driver side went in smooth but the passenger side was a pain in the @$$!!!

length wise, the magic length for me was 21" This left enough hanging out of the block to remove them and kept them short enough to easily put them in. Passenger side dowel had to be sanded down a bit for me to fit it in the block.

As for the size of the dowel rods, I laid them out next to the cam and cut them about 2 inches longer than the cam was. That left just enough of the dowel rod sticking out of the block to easily remove them.

Did you have to use magnets to hold the lifters up with the rods?
Some guys use both. Why ?

Thanks, Ryan
