Default LS2 Timing chain

Im gonna be doing my cam swap guys here pretty soon, and i was gonna be using the LS2 timing chain for my swap. I was wondering do i need the gears or just the chain? My car has 121K miles on it right now. Also where is a good place to get it from, and can i have some part numbers? I looked on gm parts direct but couldnt find it anywhere..thanks for the help guys.

With your mileage I would get the gears and chain. SDPC sell them as a kit if I remember right. They are a sponsor on the right.

If your crank and cam gear are okay you can reuse them with the LS2 timing chain. The GM part number of the LS2 chain is 12586482.

I'll be using a LS2 chain and gears as well. At the time I bought it, I didn't think much about having the gears, but the guy I bought it from off here was good enough to send me everything I needed.

I'd check the for sale section too, since I picked mine up there. I've seen a number of LS2 parts on there lately.

Good luck.

I have the LS2 timing chain, and felt it was the right way to go at around 36000 miles considering I was going from 400 rwhp to 473 rwhp with the adidition of the AFR heads an underdrive pulley and the meziere electric water pump. I know the NEW ls2 chain can handle the stress. Good choice to upgrade when you upgrade power.

FWIW, I just ordered a heavy duty chain and gear (Cloyes) from Summit...around $70. I'll let you know what I think when I get it. They have always made high quality SBC stuff so I think it's a good bet...

I would if I was you. One thing to consider, if you buy a low mileage one (like I did, < 1000 miles I believe) it's best to install the chain on the original gears. Often times, these parts wear together and tend to perform best when kept with the original set.

Just a thought.

I just put an LS2 chain on my car when I did the cam swap. My car had 50k miles on it at that time. It works fine, the LS2 chain is plenty strong for my needs. For the original poster I recommended replacing the gears and chain based only on his mileage. I would replace the set if I were you.

Scroggin-Dickey or Fred Bean will have them at a good price.

From what I've seen, most come as a set. If I was going to the trouble to change the chain when I was doing heads and a cam, I'd opt for the gears as well.

Never hurts and better safe than sorry. My car is currently at 106K, so I figured I'd do both while I'm in there.

I would say if you are around 100k miles, or if you plan to keep the engine quite some time it would not hurt to change the gears with the chain.

In my case I just put a new chain on because I only had 49k miles on it, and I plan to be gettting a new engine some time next year.
