Default Damn it..broke a cam retainer bolt..pic..help?

My question is will it be alright with only three bolts holding it on?
I was torqing them down to 18lbs and gave it just an little extra tug and the head of the bolt broke off and i think it fell in the damn oil pan because i cannot find it anywhere else....
pulling the oil pan isnt a problem cause the tranny is gonna come out for a new clutch which will make easy to pull out. Still damn annoying though.
everything was going so good to...damit.

I vote for "you will be fine". However, I think that if you pull the plate back off, it looks like there is enough bolt left to grab with vise grips?

to do it right you need to remove the old bolt either with an extractor or drill and tap. and replace the bolt, you also need to find the other end. not a good idea to have it in the oil pan. try removing the drain plug and putting a magnet in there. might be small enough to remove that way. just and idea.

I agree...
tomorrow i will try to get the bolt head out...i might be able to catch it with vice grips...i tryed with some plyers breifly to no avail. I will try again.
But there is no way that bolt head will come out of the drain...i have to drop it down an inch and stick my magnet in there to find it.
then i will roll over to a pontiac dealer tomorrow and order some new bolts and a oil temp sensor ....
i will let you all know what happens

But in other news...here goes the magic stick

You need all four. If the plate leaks, your oil pressure will suffer.

Just a side note, I never had good luck with torque wrenches. I've never had an issue by doing them with regular wrenches and ratchets.

I'd pull the plate off and try to use a bolt extractor kit (sears has a good one). If that doesn't work, you can use a screw extractor. Either way, find the head of the bolt!

I have ARP bolts on that plate. They were like 9 bucks. Have them on the cam sprocket also.

I'm paranoid.

same here, no issues with the arp hardware, second the paranoid. Also might be a good time to get your toque wrench calibrated again, you should not have broke those at 18 and a little, maybe like 30 ft lbs, but not 23 or so. If you have a crappy torque wrench, might be time to toss it.

I think visegrips will work. When I got my motor it had a broken header bolt that I removed w/ visegrips. It took some effort and very hard clamping, but it came right out. My next step was going to be tack weld a steel bar and use that to remove it.

Yup, there should be enough material left on the screw to punch it counter clock wise till the tip backs out enough to grab with some pliers.

The reason you can't find the bolt head is because it didn't break off and drop in the oil pan. That's the LOCATOR DOWEL! If you have any extras I'll smoke one of those.

Have you tried to get a magnet down in the front of the pan? It might not have made it all the way down....
