a 402 is a 4 in bore/stroke, a 408 is a 4.030 bore/4 inch stroke, 404 is somewhere in the middle.... people are doing them as an inexpensive way to add displacment, either with the iron block, or the ls2, as the blocks start with a 4 inch bore.

Because most of the bigger setups use a re-sleeved aluminum block, which are generally hit and miss.
I personally preferred to use an iron block bored out to 4.030 and give up the 20 cubes i'd gain with a resleeved stock block. I can be 100% assured I won't drop a sleeve with an iron block... but I couldn't even begin to count the number of people I have personally known who've dropped sleeves on the resleeved aluminum blocks.

Verdad Gallardo I didnt resleave my aluminum new 05 LS2 block 4.030" bore , MrEracer (Shirl Dickey) does it all the time with no problems at all ,He has sonic tested these blocks and told me that they had plenty of meat left for nos or boost.

What kind of #'s you think my 408 project will generate with a supercharger and all the correct boltons. H/C etc,etc. My driveline is setup to hold 700 rwtq maybe a little more. I sured it up when I had the 346 that was in it built up. I knew down the road that a blown 408 would be going in there if and when the 346 goes. Let me hear some opinions based on experiences please. Thanks.....
Probably more power then you'll be able to put to the ground that's for sure... and if it does hook, the vetter driveline isn't gonna want to play with that for long I'd suspect. There is people hitting 700 rwhp with 346 blower setup's, so I'd guess that would be an easy # to achieve, probably capable of more, how much more, and how much will the driveline take, I don't know.

Probably a Magnusson, or maybe a D1SC. Not sure yet. That is down the road, hopefully don't have to know for a long while. I don't think the P1SC would make enough, and the F1 is beyond what I want, but cutting the hood open to show off the polished Magnusson up top looks sweet. I know of 1 guy with over the top intercooling using a Magnusson that picked up almost 200 hp/tq to the wheel. I saw the cut hood look on a couple of Corvettes, and the fit and finish was awesome. If I was going to cut my hood to do it like that, I would make additional cuts to let the air pressure out and help reduce engine bay temps and front end lift at high speeds.
Numbersd in Sig. I love my Iron 408. Could have went alum but wanted the strength. The 100lbs doesn`t hurt me at all. The Front still pulls!!!! you can see the TRQ I get with my 408. Good Luck!! But he is right. Just on motor I have a hard time hooking. On spray, we`ll you take a good guess,lol!! Man it makes life fun!
How much should someone have budgeted aside for a 408 build if they already have a cam, heads and intake to swap over? I imagine you would still be needed injectors and a fuel system-what else is needed besides that?
Depending on where and how builds teh motor, it will probably be around 4800 give or take depending on what parts you go with and who builds it, and you should figure on at least a racetronix type fuel setupa nd a set of 42 lb injectors, annything less then either of those won't give you much room to grow. Depending on what setup you go with will decide alot of it, if you use the iron block, most of the engine covers and whatnot transferr over, but if you go with a ls2 setup you will need all the ls2 engine covers, so there's a little more involved
