Default cam bearing ?

pulled the motor and upon tear down i noticed the cam bearings were a copper/bronze color. No grooves/gouges on any of them and the camshaft looked fine. Is that the stock factory color? Or should they be like main/rod bearings and be like a silvery color?

I think in 97/98 Ls1 the cam bearing was copper colored.. Otherwise that would be a indication that it is worn

my '98 LS1 cam bearings are copper colored as well... I'm assuming they're originally like that.

I would check the ID with a T gauge or micrometer. If there is more than .0035 clearance to the cam, it's time for new bearings.

The silver layer on the cam bearings seem sto be extremely thin and they may show what looks like wear extremely early on. Mine looked worn when i first cammed my car, but so did my buddies whose motor only had 8K on it. Ive not had a problem 50K miles later.

My 00 had discolouration too, lots of copper showing. There have been a few threads including one quoting a guy from HPE Engines who said to check it with a mic as its normal. As long as they are in spec you are good to go. Mine were.
