Default Dissapointed with TR224

I just installed a Tr224/112lsa cam in my 99 Trans AM in the place of my Hotcam. With the Hotcam and Hooker longtubes,off-road y-pipe,160 t-stat,free mods, and Flowmaster 3in cat back the car made 358hp and 353lb/ft tq at the rear wheels.I put the new cam in with Comp Cams pushrods,941 springs, titanium retainers, and an adjustable timing set installed straight up.The Tr224 made 361hp and 358lb/ft tq.I was hoping for at least 370hp or so at the wheels.I also had a Gm Tech 2 scanner on it at the time it was dynoed and timing was 24 deg total and 0 deg knock retard. I was wondering if you guys had any ideas. Thanks for your input.

One more thing if I can figure out how to work my scanner Ill post my dyno sheet. It was almost a mirror image between the Hotcam and the Tr224.

ATAP it and see what the air/fuel is. How long did you drive the car before the dyno session? Your A/F ratio may need some fine tuning, and you could probably use some more timing, like 28°.
Any other ideas? Maybe it will get better if you didn't give the pcm enough time to get used to the new cam.

You should add some timing. Somewhere around 28-29 is good. Keep an eye on KR. This will give you at least 10rwhp. You also need to check out you A/F ratio.

It would be a good idea to get your A/F ratio checked, as someone posted above. You really can't get an accurate comparison between the two until you do so.

24 degrees is a little low for timing. If you can get in ~28-29 degrees, you have 5-6rwhp left with that.

Agree with others as above, but you didn't mention if you got tuning after the install. Also, is your rev limiter bumped up? I pulled 371 untuned with my TR224/114. After tuning, a healthy 387.

I didnt check the air fuel ratio, and I have the stock tune in the computer.I used the HPP3 to raise my rev limit to 6600rpm. Thats as high as it will let me go.I drove the car for about 3wks before I redynoed the car.

They've all covered basically what I'd think might be causing the lower power output, but have you thought of dumping the flowcrap exhaust or getting a cutout put on? I don't know how much it'd help but flowmasters aren't exactly well known for how well they flow

I was just comparing apples to apples so to speak.I just recently installed a Borla catback in the place of the Flowmaster. Im also considering a Diablo or Superchips controller with a custom program.

Run it at the track before you make any other changes and see if you run better than the HotCam #'s before you throw more money at the new cam. Like you said, apples to apples comparison. Like the other said, tuning may help but then again, tuning would help the Hotcam also. LOLs

Posting that you are dissapointed is wrong!!Your tune sucks, that is why the #'s are low.Would you put a 422 in the car without tuning it and say the motor sucks? With the timing at 28 degrees and the right A/F you will easily be at 370-380hp and gain a good amount of torque across the range.

Even though he had no tuning the comparison was a good comparison between the 2 cams.. Both cams were handicapped secondary to no tuning.. If he got tuning now you cant really say the new cam is that much better than the old cam.. He picked up 4rwhp/5rwtq with the swap with all things being the same. There is no telling what tuning would have done for the hotcam.. There are hotcam owners dyno'ing the same as other popular cams. The problem I see is most do not tell the whole story when they do swaps and they leave the consumer out to dry.. If you do a cam swap and you post information on this board people will think it is fact.. Even when some leave out tiny little details like thru cutout, with shortbelt, no air filter, tire pressure at 40psi, ported
TB, etc.. I really wish people would not lie..

I just think it illustrates that the Hotcam, at least on stock heads, is not as big a "handicap" as some would have you think. I know it's certainly given me decent results and I'm trapping at 115+mph, and still with full stock induction (intake/TB/MAF+screen), and mods in sig.

Slowhawk,

He didn't say the cam sucked. He just stated he was alittle disappointed. He was just posting what he experienced. Like what was posted above, it is a good comparison cause the cam swap was the only change. If the TR cam could benefit from tuning so could the Hotcam I'm sure.

Ive seen a couple threads were people did the same swap where both cams had tuning and the gain from the 224 was under 10 hp compared to the hotcam. I think your gains are about right tuned or not. But like everyone said, if you get a good tune you should see at least 360 or so.

Yes,I got the point of this post. What I'm saying is that you can't just put on a different part and expect the computer to compensate and it runs perfect.I bet if a 230/236 cam was installed the same way that you would gain no power either because of tuning.
Now to the point. If the car only had 24 degrees of timing,It means that there is knock or the A/F is so rich that the timing is being pulled.
When those problems are fixed, then you should post how you like the results
