Solid vs. Hyd valve train for Street/Strip?
Hyd roller cams/valve train have come a log way, but still hit or miss at controlling the valves above 6,500rpm.
My goals are a 383 stroker, ET 215 heads with a cam in the mid 240’s with .650 lift. Looking for a lope as aggressive as a LSK, and to be able to control it up to 7,400rpm.
Not sure if a Hyd. will get it done.
Street/Strip Solid rollers are getting more common lately.
I am looking for info, recommendations, do’s and don’ts for Solid Roller Street/Strip set-up.
What do you think?

i have a sr in my street/strip car and it works great.if you want to turn 7400 rpms and can live with the extra noise i wouldn't hesitate on going that route.also i hardly ever have to make valve lash adjustments,but i only drove it maybe 2k a year.

I would fully trust a hydraulic setup to 7000 or even 7200, but going to 7400 might be pushing it just a touch. You can probably control a LSK hydraulic cam at 7400 if you machine out the heads and run a stouter spring. I dont know if the popular dual spring kits will handle it.

With the ET 11 degrees valves they are a little longer and therefore heavier.

The solid roller will allow you to have a much more aggressive ramp and more lift supported by a much stiffer spring. You can't run 250# on the seat and 600# over the nose with a hydraulic cam.
The result would let you get the big numbers at .200 and .050 with less time off the seat. I believe DAPERSLO is using a solid XE cam (a little more aggressive than an LSK) with a 1.95 rocker!
The trade-off are more noise, the need for adjustable shaft rockers or a stud girdle for stability, adjustments (which to me are a good thing), potential lifter issues. The lifter issues occur because there is some pounding on the needle bearings at idle and other low oil pressure time. Schubeck has lifters without needle bearings, however they are over $900 set.
If racing is important and solid rollers are allowed in a rule restricted class, not using them just means you aren't serious. For bracket racing, are they worth the trade-off?
Note: In the 60's, before roller lifters for street cars, all of the real performance cars--Z28s, LT1, 435hp, and L88 Vettes, Boss 302s, Boss 429s, Super Cobra Jets, Hemis, etc.--had solid lifters.

The valves in my 265's are bigger than the the 215's, and I still plan to run hydraulic. I'll be using the LSK's, but I did get the lighter, light weight titanium retainers (half the weight of the normal titanium retainer) and the .700" lift PSI springs. Morel lifters also. I think you'd be fine with a 2.02 valve and the same combo as I have above.

If I go hyd, I will also use Morel.
I will check with Crag about the lighter titanium retainers.
I do like the LSK lobes, but I have not seen any LSK spinning into the low 7,000 with valve control yet.
What push rods are you going to use?

I am running a solid roller in my 402. It is a Comp Cams solid roller 254/260 660/666 113+1 cam. I am running AFR 225 heads with Comp 917 springs. The Comp 917 springs are 1.550 diameter with 200 lbs seat pressure and 596 lbs open pressure. The rocker arms I am running are the new Crane shaft mount rocker arms. Push rods are 5/16 .080 wall. So far the highest I have spun it is 7200 but I wouldn't be afraid to spin it to 7400.

You can build a great bracket racer with a hydraulic. And a great street car. However, if your class as rules or you are trying to be exotic or set some leading dyno numbers, you will need the solid roller.
And clearly, you can make a great 6500, maybe even 7000rpm motor with hydraulics. But you need to keep the valvetrain mass down and use a good spring.

There will be a new Hyd roller lifter introduced later this year that has been in testing for the last 18 months. It will allow you to run 200# seat pressure and 7800 rpm constantly without worry of pumping the lifter up and hanging the valve open. So you will have the benefits of hyd roller maintenance with the rpm capability of solid roller. Should be released sometime in late August.

I am running Comp solid lifters. Tony Mamo modified them for me. Supposely Comp has redesigned them now but at first there was a problem with them. Comp had a second oil hole in them and you would lose oil pressure. Tony had a set and offered to weld the second hole and guarantee them for me. So far they are working fine.
