Default No oil pressure

Hi,
I'm new here and this is my first post. I'm putting an LS1 into a 70 nova. I put a new ported oil pump in when I had the engine apart. Last night I was cranking it to make sure I had pressure before I started it for the first time and the needle never budged. I cranked for a good 30 seconds several times and never had pressure. Now I'm afraid to start it. Any suggestions?

did you install the o ring in the oil pump pick up tube?

Did oil make it into the filter?

What kind of gauge are you using?

Yes, I installed the O ring...
Don't know if oil made it to the filter. Didn't check that. It's a brand new Pro Comp Ultra Lite mechanical gauge. I called SLP's tech line and he said I'll never get any pressure by just cranking the motor. He said I need to start it up to get pressure, but my buddy said I should crank it to prime it. Is this standard? Should I crank it and get pressure or should I just start it and watch for pressure?

You should just start it and watch the oil pressure gauge. You should have pressure in 5 seconds. If not, shut it off.

This is from ls1howto.com

Your oil pressure needs to be watched like a hawk on this first startup. It will sit at zero very briefly, and within 3-5 seconds it should come up to 30-50psi at idle.

Might take a little longer if you didn't prefill the oil filter. I know it is a scary prospect. You just need to have faith in your install. It took my car a good 60 sec. after the h/c project to register. It took me several short crank overs until I finally found pressure.

ON my recent motor install, I cranked the motor over serveral times for about 30 seconds each. It never read any oil pressure.. I was very nervous but knew I did everthing right when assembling the long block. Well I started it and about 5 seconds later the pressure shot to 60 PSI..

Unhappy

Right!!
Thanks Guys, I fired it up and the pressure immediately went up to 50 psi.
The only trouble now is that it runs for 3 to 5 seconds and shuts down.

Do not worry mine did the same thing.. Just hold the throttle open and let it warm up and it should start finding its idle. Are you using a stock cam? If not is your PCM tuned for an aftermarket cam?

If you're using a stock PCM do you have VATS disabled ? AH - BS3, nevermind...

That is wrong, I got pressure cranking my motor over.

It's a TMI cam 224\227. My buddy tuned the pcm with HP tuner software. Not sure if he disabled the VATS. He's in Florida, I'm in PA, and he ain't answerin' his cell phone.

I've pulled plugs and fuel and cranked.... it cranked fast enough to see 20psi after a couple seconds.
