Default Did I lift the Heads?

Last Saturday night I made 3 1/8th mile passes on N20 using a 75 HP shot. After the 3rd pass I pitted, popped the hood to let it cool and noticed coolant puddled around the over flow tank area. I checked the heads to see if they were leaking and couldn't see anything. I decided it's better to safe than sorry so I went home. The next morning I checked the level in the over fill tank while the engine was cold, the dip stick read full hot. I checked the radiator, the level was down some so brought it up to the top of the filler neck, started the car and let it warm up until the thermostat opened and topped it off again. I've checked the coolant level every moring, it's right where it's supposed to be and I still don't see any leaks at the heads. I'm thinking it lifted the heads but I thought when the heads lifted the head gaskets would blow out and and start leaking coolant but I can't find any indication of a leak. What else should I check? A soon as it warms up I'm going to go out and pull a couple of the plugs and check the oil for coolant. Is there anything else that would indicate the heads had infact lifted? Sorry this is soooo long, TIA.

Get the car up to temp make sure the thermostat is opening up...open the radiator cap and see if you have water pulsating up and out. I did and it went up about 1 1/2 to 2 foot above the radiator.
If you have a leak from the water to the cylender it should show this way.

I'm assuming your car is fairly stock. If it is then a 75 shot is not going to lift the heads. You could have a small head gasket leak. Give us more about your setup...

Sounds like a small head gasket leak. I don't see any mention of an aftermarket or inline fuel pump. Have you checked timing and fuel pressure when on the spray?

I did the same thing, lifted a head. But I didn't know it until I saw the dried coolant on the side of the head. I just pulled the motor, and the gasket looked great, other than some coolant on it. But I did have dried coolant all along the top of the head, and it looks like it either lifted up there also, and ran down under the intake to the front.

The stock gasket looked great on my motor. I wish I had studs installed when I did the head & cam. I recomend that you get them.

Thanks for the responses guys,

I'm getting ready to order a set of Cometic head gaskets and ARP head studs from Speed Inc. Oh well guess I'll have to wait on the new converter for a while. I just spent a ton of cash on a 12 bolt. I'm going crazy and broke at the same time, does the madness ever end? <img border="0" alt="[bang head]" title="" src="graemlins/gr_banghead.gif" />
