Default MORE Perf Valve Spring tool, a dud?

Well, it sure takes the stock springs off but it's totally useless when installing some stiffer springs, i.e. Comp 918s. It WILL NOT compress the spring far enough down the valve to put the keepers in. It chips easily and looks as if it is going to crack. This is NOT worth $130, IMO. Unless the one we are using is not CNC'd properly it's a total waste of money.

$15 at your local Napa. Works on all the spring combos as long as the retainer fits under it. We cut one down very short so that it would fit under the cowl as well. This pic is of it on a Corvette. And you can take your sweet time putting the keepers in without losing your patience.

try some rev duals buddy, I needed help to compress a few of those in the back side of the motor. I think the tool works great, the aluminum may get weak after time though....

For what it is, $130 is not justified. The SLP $49.95 tool works just fine.

SER912 - GM Valve Spring Compressor with heads on engine

We bought two of them. The second one we cut down to just above the hole in the handle. It fit under the cowl and gave us something to tap on up there. You could actually use just one that is cut down as well. You basically buy a bolt that fits the rocker stud threads and drive it down. As you drive the bolt down just tap the top of the valve spring to knock the keepers loose. Works like a champ.

We have 2 of them in the shop that we use and they both work great. I wonder if you have a bad one. I would call one of the guys at More Performance and talk to them about the problems.

The SLP(Snap On)tool works fine but also takes 3times as long. The More Performance tool is far superior. Wish I had thought of it. Thanks Guys

Dave, excellent idea. What is the thread and pitch of the rocker bolt?

<img src="http://www.napaonline.com/images_products/full_sized/30213.jpg" alt=" - " />

See the hole in the handle, just take a hacksaw and whack the rest of the handle off just above the hole. Then if you need leverage (which we didn't) you can use a screwdriver through the hole.

I don't remember the pitch and thread size off the top of my head. You can take your rocker arm to Lowes and get a bolt there. I used a farily lengthy screw, it was well into the head before it started to compress. But the threaded rod idea is good too.

You'll be surprised, this tool takes no effort to use. We just tightened it down snug, tap the valve spring with a rubber mallet to break the keepers loose (sounds rough, but it's easy) and then tighten down a little further. I've got more pics at: http://www.derty.org/install/c5cam.

Derty, thanks so much for the clarification. I'll get this tool and cut it like you suggested. It looks totally painless!

I think a threaded rod with nut and washer would be better for the NAPA unit, less likely to strip the rocker bolt hole threads.... Use 2 nuts too feed rod in all the way, remove nuts, put tool on rod, then washer then nut and start tightening?....

Derty, do you have to cut this tool down? What are you referring to as the "cowl" on the C5 that you can clear if you cut this down? I just this tool up and wanted to make sure I had to cut it down <img border="0" title="" alt="[Wink]" src="gr_images/icons/wink.gif" />
