Default cam swap questions

Will a impact that's good for 1000 lbs work for breaking loose the crank?

Also, Do I have to replace the chain and pump? I"m going w/a TR224

My goat only has 25,000 miles

thanks in advance

I woulnd't recommend using an impact gun on the crank pulley. Just get urself a good long extension and that'll be just fine. You don't want to risk messing up the threads of the crank. Just go slow, take your time and make sure you know exactly what your doing each step of the way. If you don't, just ask and someone will chime in.

I don't emagine u'd have to replace your chain and pump with an 04 that has 25k on it. You should be just fine as is.

Use it for removal only if you must. I got mine off with a 3ft pipe and a good socket. No need to replace the pump or timing chain.

There's a fair bit of torque there to overcome....hang on to the gun!

Seriously, I prefer the breaker/pipe method as it goes nice and slow and lessens the possibility of breakage of the bolt.

As for the chain, plenty over here don't change it on cars of that mileage and get away with it for 100K miles, but, a double row or ls2 chain may offer better peace of mind.

Good luck with it.

Cheers,

Macca

I left my pump and chain in during my 100k mile H/C install. Everything looked good and I have solid oil pressure. The car has hit the 6800 RPM rev limiter several times without incident.

Am I asking for trouble? maybe... but somebody has to do it in the name of science.

You can use a gun but you run a higher risk of stipping the threads, not common though. Only use it for removal.
No need to change pump or chain. It will be an easy cam swap.

Yeah, I would leave the pump and chain, no worries with a low-mileage car. You can try with the impact, seems like the easy route, but you risk the threads are bolt breakage, which would be a BITCH on a swap, and would require you to pretty much pull the engine.

I wouldn't hesitate using an impact gun to remove the bolt. IMO you stand a much greater likelyhood of hurting yourself, the car, or breaking the bolt if you use along **** breaker bar. The force you apply with a breaker bar is not at all "clean" and perpendicular to the bolt.

IMO it's best to use an impact gun fitted with an "industrial" strength six point socket.
