Default Lots of valvetrain noise with stock engine

When I bought my car, there was only a little bit of a rattling sound from the valvetrain. Nothing your usual LS1 would not do. After I changed my oil the first time, using Mobile 1 0w-40, the valvetrain noise is unbearable. If revved to around 1000-1100 rpm it sounds like *****. Car is a 2002 with 58,000 miles on it. Spent another $30 on Castrol syntec 10w-40, still making same noise. I am using the AC Delco oil filter. Should I try a different filter?

Mom's 99 TA with 86,000 miles on it makes no noise with plain old 10w-30 dyno oil.

I know LS1 engines are known for this but mine is the loudest I have ever heard. Makes noise even when warmed up, no it is not piston slap.

I have a cam in my car, but my valvetrain annoys the hell out of me, i just run around with the cut-out open so it drowns it out...i have driven around this way for 10000 miles in the last 4 months with no problems, i guess i will live with it untill i have a problme

I used to run Mobil 1 5w-30, im now running 10w-30 with no change in anything, but less piston slap.

Fire, how's the oil pressure? And have you checked for a bent pushrod?

...the problem is not being caused by the oil filter.

I second the bent pushrod, there is no reason that just swapping oils would make it do that, then changing back to the original oil, it still does it. Curious to hear how the oil pressure is... Hope you find the culprit, and get it fixed!

Oil pressure is steady around 43 PSI at idle and over 60 when rpm is above 2,000 or something like that. I just read somewhere on here that the oil filter can starve the valvetrain of oil if too restrictive. Is this not true? Yes I need to check the pushrods I guess.

after my first oil change i noticed a lot of valvetrain noise, too. but, evidently the WOMAN that owned the car before me rarely changed the oil, as i changed it 3 more times in a period of 3 months. the oil would get black and shitty very quickly. it seemed that after running the new oil for ~500 miles the valvetrain noise would quiet down. since then, the car has been constantly raped (like the last 15k miles..) and has excellent oil pressure still and hardly any valvetrain noise. bent pushrods will most likely have a single tick, whereas what you're describing sounds like change in the motor..

i think if your oil was being restircted by the oil filter you would see a drop in pressure, so i doubt thats your problem.

That is a good representation of the sound. Is there any way I could have a few slightly bent pushrods. It sounds like something is loose and it is not a good feeling to have that you may have a few loose rockers.

yeah...i think my car makes the same noises. almost like pebbles or something rattling around? i dunno man, mine has done it for awhile now and i haven't noticed any loss in performance or anything in the oil. i guess if you'd like to do something for peace of mind you could pull the valve covers and disassemble everything, just to check it. apparently mine makes a similar noise, i just came to terms that these are noisy engines (sometimes) and performance / longevity isn't affected. wouldn't (a) bent pushrod(s) show a decrease in performance along with the noise? possibly a rough idle?

yeah i have always been told you will know that you have a bent pushrod cause it will feel like something is wrong, and when i bent one in my 289 (i know i was young i have learned) i could tell, the car stumbled at idle and did not like to rev freely

That is agreeable. Just say though they are slightly bent. Not enough to decrease performance or cause stumbling etc., but just enough to cause some clatter. I very slightly bent pushrod would be shorter ever so slightly and would throw off the geometry and cause noise. Just like when you use the wrong length pushrod for a new cam. I am just speaking out of my *** but it makes sense to me.

just1news6: The stripes are charcoal metallic, could not have chosen a better color to compliment the SOM in my opinion. I really need to do a photoshoot, it deserves it. This is the only pic I have with the stripes. Its the one I used for the sig. Thanks for the compiments by the way.

I bent 4 pushrods in my car and didn't even know it until a few weeks later. I overrevved her and thought I got lucky because everything sounded fine and it still revved good, then one night I went to hit second at 6000 and it cut on me, the power just went away. Got it to my friends house and sure enough "tick, tick, tick". So I think you could have slightly bent pushrods and that could be your problem like you're thinking. Get it looked at before you bent the hell out of em like I did! Hope it works out for you.
